Coffee Syrup Recipe

Mustache Coffee Club bag

I am on-again, off-again coffee drinker. I’ll go through long stints where I am deeply attached to a morning cup, only to suddenly switch to hot black tea with milk and honey. Currently, coffee and I are hot and heavy, so when the folks at Moustache Coffee Club got in touch and asked if I wanted to team up for a giveaway, I said yes.

mustache coffee beans

Based in Los Angeles, Moustache is a coffee subscription club where you can opt to get a bag of gently roasted, single origin beans on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis. They roast and ship on the same day in the hopes of getting you the freshest beans possible.

3 ounces coffee beans

They sent me a 12 ounce bag of their Colombian beans (I was told that these beans were a medium roast, which is a little darker than their norm) and asked if I might like to make something with them. And so, I did.

coffee concentrate set-up

I made a sweetened coffee concentrate to use in making a Thai iced coffee analog (which I will drink sitting on a park bench, if warmer days ever come). I measured out 3 ounces of beans and ground them quite fine (I have this grinder and I love it. It’s pricy, but good for coffee obsessives).

pouring water

I measured 1 cup of organic cane sugar into a pint sized mason jar and set the coffee filter up over it, and brewed a very strong 12 or so ounces of coffee right into the sugar.

making coffee syrup

Once the jar was nearly full with coffee, I removed the coffee filter and used a small whisk to help dissolve the sugar into the coffee. It only took a 30 seconds or so of careful stirring until the sugar and coffee were fully integrated.

full jar

I put a lid on the jar and once it was cool, popped it into the fridge. It’ll keep for a few weeks.

In addition to making a faux Thai iced coffee (traditionally, it’s made with sweetened condensed milk and freshly brewed coffee, but I find that this method makes for a faster cup and I don’t have to deal with sticky containers of sweetened condensed milk), I also occasionally will stir some of the concentrate into fizzy water for a coffee-flavored Italian soda.

  • Vietnamese coffee, made with the traditional filter and sweetened condensed milk. Which leads me to remark that if you do want to use condensed milk in your Thai or Vietnamese coffee, it is easy to pour the containerful into a reused honey dispenser, ideally one with a flat lid so it can sit upside down in your fridge.

  • I usually start my day with a cup of freshly ground coffee, can’t beat fresh coffee beans! (disclaimer: i will make a cup of keurig in a rush)

  • Coava or Heart coffee roasters here in Portland are two of my favorites. French press with a bit of half and half – perfect start to a Saturday morning!

  • In the morning, I like a hot cup of french press coffee. In the evening to unwind, I drink a hot cup of water with a slice of lemon, a little honey, and a few thyme leaves that have been dried from my garden, very relaxing.

  • My favorite warm drink is an upside down caramel macchiato as an after dinner drink in place of dessert. Not only do I prefer my shots on the bottom but mixed with whipped cream and vanilla syrup. From there add hot frothy foam, extra whip and a drizzling of caramel. Years ago, my daughter worked at the local coffee shop and the baristas concocted this version just for me and called it “The Mom Drink.”

  • I like a faux mocha (a fauxcha?) myself–coffee mixed with a packet of good hot chocolate. No comparison to the real thing but for an easy pick me up, it’s hard to beat!

  • Every morning must start with caramel coffee with fat free half & half. Sometimes I add a shot of Torani vanilla or caramel syrup!

  • My very favorite warm drink of ALL time is the Buddha liquid truffle from French Broad Chocolate Lounge in Asheville, NC. It is creamy, decadent, and painfully delicious. Sadly, I live in MA, so I won’t be having another one of these any time soon. =[

  • Dark coffee with a little bit of soy milk or creamer in the morning. I make a variety of other drinks throughout the day like jasmine tea in the early afternoon, mint tea in the evenings and hot cocoa for dessert but if I have nothing else, even on hot summer mornings is my cup of hot dark coffee.

  • This winter I’ve quite enjoyed a frothy hot milk with flavoring such as caramel syrup or vanilla extract, with some sugar for sweetening, and a hearty shake of cinnamon sugar on top. It’s my afternoon treat.

  • This faux Vietnamese coffee looks GREAT.

I think I love all hot drinks. I usually have very strong black coffee in the morning, but then tea throughout the day. And the occasional hot chocolate. Current fave is smoked black tea with cream and a smidge of sugar.

  • Favorite warm drink- something my mom calls Russian tea: a combination of Tang, powdered iced tea, powdered lemonade, and cinnamon in boiling water. A tad too much to have on a regular basis, but delicious in moderation.

  • I make my coffee each morning with my Aero press but when I want to indulge I go for a latte with almond syrup. num num

  • I love my morning coffee, but a cup of good jasmine green tea has a simple decadence I can enjoy any time of day.

  • When I need caffeine, I usually turn to coffee (Chemex, black) or Earl Grey tea (with or without milk). When I need decaf, I switch it up to rooibos or barley tea. This afternoon, I need caffeine, so it’s coffee time!

  • Hot chocolate with real whipped cream. DH, however loves a good cup of hot black coffee so I would love to win this for him.

  • I have so many warm drink faves: Chai, hot cocoa, vanilla latte. But I think my french pressed coffee with brown sugar and cinnamon is a go-to right now. 🙂

  • I am mainly a tea drinker, but for some reason nothing quite does it for me in the morning like a cup of coffee with sugar and half&half.
