Giveaway: Naturally Sweet Food in Jars

Naturally Sweet Food in Jars cover (1)

My birthday is this Saturday and in celebration, I’m giving away three copies of my new cookbook, Naturally Sweet Food in Jars. As most of you know, this is my third cookbook(!) and it focuses on preserving with honey, maple, agave, coconut sugar, fruit juice concentrates, and dried fruits.

Naturally Sweet Food in Jars spine

The idea for this book was initially sparked by this post, as well as the many alternatively sweetened recipes that have come since on this site. The finished book features more than 100 recipes for preserves, as well as a handful of recipes designed to help you use up some of what you’ve put up.

Naturally Sweet Food in Jars roasted apricot jam

I had two primary goals in mind when I was writing Naturally Sweet. The first was to translate some of my most beloved sugar-sweetened recipes into those that used less refined sweeteners.

Naturally Sweet Food in Jars Honeyed Meyer Limoncello

The second objective was to create new and novel recipes that would be safe for canning and that featured the various sweeteners in ways that made the most of their unique, individual flavors.

Naturally Sweet Food in Jars Lemony Strawberry Jam

I also wanted to help change the conversation about preserving. So often, people dismiss it because they feel like the products created when you preserve aren’t always the healthiest.

Naturally Sweet Food in Jars Concord Grape Jam

However, by shining a spotlight on alternative sweeteners, I feel like I’ve created a collection of recipes that are able to balance health concerns with issues of safety and shelf stability.

Naturally Sweet Food in Jars Sweet Onion Relish

And, as always, the recipes are relatively small batches that don’t require too much of your time and energy.

  1. Happy Birthday! My most memorable birthday meal, was when my now-ex husband brought me a lobster dinner, when I was 9 months pregnant with our fourth child, and on bed rest. She was born the next day, guess it did the trick.

  2. Happy birthday! Ever since my boyfriend told me he always eats oysters on his birthday (until his first birthday he spent with me – whoops!), I’ve felt my list has been missing a birthday food. In my early 20s, pancakes were a favorite birthday breakfast food, but generally each year it’s been whatever food I’m into at the moment. If my current foodisms continue through the summer, this year’s birthday food will be pickles. πŸ˜‰

  3. Happy Birthday! I love birthday cake, but I haven’t had one of my own for years. Maybe this year.

  4. Happy birthday! My husband takes me out for dinner and usually we go to Olive Garden and I get the mushroom ravioli! Yum.

I have your book from the library, looks like there are a lot of great recipes. I do wish it were easier to leave open on the counter though!

  5. Happy birthday! My favorite birthday food is Korean seaweed soup, which is a traditional birthday soup ?

  6. Happy Birthday! Thanks for the giveaway.

My husband and I like to get a sitter (though our oldest of 5 is finally getting old enough to babysit. Yay!!) and then go out for sushi and frozen custard on birthdays. You can’t beat sushi!!!

  7. Happy Birthday, Marisa. For my own birthday, I tend to go for green curry (one of my favorite foods that I can’t cook myself), and perhaps a fancy bottle of whiskey or wine to celebrate.

  8. Happy Birthday! With a birthday on Christmas Eve there is not usually a birthday party. I have recently changed this by having my family take me out for a sushi lunch before the family arrives to celebrate Christmas.

  9. Many very happy returns of the day, and may you have many more! My favorite birthday treat is pretty much any lemon dessert — lemon pie, lemon cake, you name it.

  10. Happy birthday!! In my house, birthdays are all about cupcakes with mounds of frosting. We usually try a new cupcake each year.

  11. Happy birthday to you! Celebrations just aren’t complete without a good drink and cheese to pair with it. Love the blog and loved getting to meet you at a class in Philly this year!

  12. Happiest of Birthdays to you. Birthdays at our house mean getting to eat cake in bed for breakfast. The rest of the year a “growing” food before “treat” food rule is in effect. So it’s extra fun to break the rules on your birthday. My indulgence… Carrot cake.

  13. I always want some ice cream. A good natural vanilla is my favorite – even though I am a chocoholic

  14. Happy birthday friend! My birthday is not complete without a lemon cake with rainbow chip frosting. I’ll never grow out of it ?

  15. Cheesecake–there’s a tiny little place near me (truly tiny, so small it can only serve drive-through customers, as the building only has room for refrigerators and a cashier) that has the best cheesecake on Earth.

  16. Happy birthday to you! We have a great photo of my dad blowing out the candles on a pie and sending the sugar on top all over the person seated opposite. That man really loved pie, though, so cake has been entirely optional.

  17. Happy Birthday! No favorite food, just what I feel like on that day. Love your cookbooks. This one will be especially nice for me. I have as much honey as I can use every year from my son’s hives. Nice to find another way to use it.

  18. Happy birthday fellow May baby! Any flavour of cake works for me as long as its gluten free so that my husband can have some.

  19. Happy birthday! I always go for dinner at my local German restaurant for schnitzel with paprika rahm sauce, spΓ€tzle, and pickled red cabbage.

  20. Happy Birthday! I always have pistachio pudding cake on my birthday, just like my mom used to make for us growing up! Thanks for the lovely giveaway. <3

  21. I always have carrot cake for my birthday. Mostly as a delivery method for cream cheese frosting. Yum! Happy birthday!

  22. marisa! my birthday is also soon and I’m currently planning on throwing a low-key tea party because that’s how to really assert you’re an adult, right? anyways, I’ve been thinking a lot about the food but especially the cake… and I really want some sort of lemon cake. I’m thinking a lavender-lemon raw cheesecake. anyways, happy birthday!! I hope it’s full of so much fun and great food.

  23. Happy birthday! Since my birthday is in the winter, I always enjoy drinking a peppermint mocha to celebrate.

  24. Happy Happy Birthday! My mama always makes me a homemade birthday treat so there are so many yummy things to pick from: molasses cookies, chocolate cheesecake, tiramisu, boston cream pie, apple pie, anginetti cookies- so glad my birthday is coming up soon!!

  25. My family used to do angle food cakes, now with my kids and hubby we do our families chocolate cake or Mississippi Mud cake (so rich and yummy!) and I love to keep it simple for myself since I have to do the cooking πŸ™‚ Happy Birthday to you!

  26. My birthday is right around Thanksgiving so we usually just tack my birthday onto holiday since everyone is already in one place. I request my mom’s cranberry-chocolate fudge as a birthday dessert- it’s delicious and she guards the recipe from the rest of the family.

  27. Our family has been into doughnuts for birthdays the last few years. I just received your second book for mother’s day. Love it. But I think your newest book is more how I cook every day. Can’t wait to see it too. I do hope you have a happy day!

  28. Happy birthday! I love cherry chip cake with vanilla frosting flavored with maraschino cherry juice. My grandma made it for me every birthday when I was little.

  29. Happy birthday!! You are an inspiration! I can’t rennet anymore how many years I have been reading FIJ. I am so looking forward to summer fruit and Naturally Sweet FOod in Jars.

  30. For 35 years I had a chocolate cake with a pink heart in the frosting. My birthday is on Valentine’s Day.

  31. Congratulations on your publication and happy birthday!
For my birthday,I love lemon cake.
I have been doing lots of edibles in jar, mostly dehydrated fruits and your book sounds intriguing.

  32. Happy Birthday! My birthday is in high summer so I like to eat my childhood favourite: toast-tites – a sort of homemade blueberry pop-tart

  33. My birthday is next week, and I’m not sure what I will eat but my daughter notified me my cake needs pink frosting.

  34. I like spaghetti with meat sauce that my dad makes for my birthday. And a strawberry pop tart for breakfast. My mom would only buy them for my birthday – and I always thought that they were SO special. Now I eat one for the memory it evokes….because they sure don’t taste as good as I remember!

  35. I like spaghetti with meat sauce that my dad makes for my birthday. I like salty things more than sweet – so a cake isn’t as important πŸ™‚ BUT I like a strawberry pop tart for breakfast on my birthday. My mom would only buy them for my birthday – and I always thought that they were SO special. Now I eat one for the memory it evokes….because they sure don’t taste as good as I remember!

  36. Happy Birthday! I recommend grape jam on toast for your breakfast! I’ve been making grape jam with my grandmother’s grapes for years, and it’s always a favorite. I’m excited to try out your recipe. Best wishes!

  37. Angel food cake with whipped cream and strawberries. The cake has to be homemade and by me because I enjoy the process of the angel food cake making as much as eating it.

  38. Happy Birthday! My treat of choice is a good croissant, optimally with a cup of milky coffee on a bench in a lovely park.

  39. Happy Birthday! My favorite birthday treat is some type of fruit pie – fresh strawberry, raspberry or peach.

  40. I met you in SF years ago before any books, you’d just updated your logo and shared it, as well as sharing canning tips. So nice to see your success! And the continued enthusiasm. Happy birthday to you! I eat whatever the heck I’m in the mood for on my birthday πŸ˜‰

  41. Very merry birthday to you. On my birthday my husband bakes a cake (this only happens about once a year since I’m the cook between us). It’s stellar every year. I hope someone makes you something lovely.

Thank you for producing such an awesome book. I’m looking forward to cooking through it.

  42. Happy birthday, Marissa. My favorite birthday treat is either a coconut cream pie with meringue or sour cream raisin pie.

  43. Happy Birthday Marisa!! Around here we love cheesecake for our birthdays. πŸ™‚ Congrats on your 3rd book! And thank you for the giveaway.

  45. Happy Birthday!!!
My favorite treat on my birthday is dark chocolate cheesecake and port.
Your new book sounds great. One of the things I appreciate about your blog is you do post ideas on how to use the items you have put up. That really helps when a person needs a bit of direction and inspiration.
By the way, your honey limoncello sounds wonderful!

  46. Wishing you a Very Happy Birthday.
Your Birthday is a special day..
    One that’s just for you
    A time for doing everything

And on this day that belongs to you,
    The wish this greeting brings
Is for the joy you so deserve
    And all life’s nicest things!
Hope you have a wonderful and enjoyable day

    What I would like to eat on my birthday………..anyone’s else’s cooking besides mine for that day:}
Actually; I prefer having pizza and then fro dessert; a small, warm lava cake A la mode.

Thank you for this giveaway opportunity

  47. Happy birthday, Marisa! My favorite birthday celebration is with carrot or spice cake, and a nice dinner with family where someone else volunteers to clean up! Can’t wait to get a copy of your new book, because I turn often to Preserving by the Pint.

I love going for breakfast on my birthday with much coffee

  53. Happy Birthday! Regardless of what you eat, you’ll feel even better about your birthday if you wear a tiara.

  54. Our family always has a fish fry on my birthday. All kinds of fish, some bought and some caught. And happy birthday to you.

  55. Happy birthday to you! Mine is Halloween and I love a big breakfast. I love giving out candy to the kids at night so I have the rest of the day for me.

  56. Happy Birthday to you! My birthday is May 21, and like Winnie-the-Pooh, I would love to eat eat anything with honey! Yummy!

  57. Happy Birthday! My mom always made angel food cake with strawberries and whipped cream for my birthday. That tradition continues. My favorite birthday meal is salmon and asparagus.

  58. Happy Birthday! I don’t have a favorite birthday food, but if my birthday was tomorrow I’d love to have pecan balls like my mom used to make at Christmas. They’re a buttery shortbread cookie stuffed full of pecans and thickly coated with powdered sugar. I haven’t had them in at least 20 years!

  59. Last year we had an abundance of low bush blueberries scattered across our woods. My favorite birthday treat is blueberry pie and I would love to use these to make it! HAPPY BIRTHDAYS!!

  60. Anything w/blueberries! Hoping your birthday & your entire year will be filled w/peace, joy, & creativity. Happy Birthday!

  61. Happy Birthday, Marissa! May your birthday be blessed with many sweet things. You have certainly made all our lives sweeter by sharing your wonderful recipes for preserves.

  62. Wishing you a very happy birthday, and many happy returns of the day. On my birthday, I like to have a cup of tea brought to me in bed (first thing in the morning — before I’m even all the way awake) — bliss!

  63. Happy Birthday! I hope you get to eat what ever you like on your birthday. As for me….I just want someone else to make dinner. πŸ™‚ I have a long list of foods I love, but you know what? If someone cooks for me, I don’t care what it is, I’m just grateful.

Be well and have a marvelous day and fantastic weekend.

  64. Happy Birthday! Put your feet up and enjoy the day! For the past 3 years, my daughter has been making me a birthday cake. She makes it from scratch. Just like her Granny taught her. She loves to bake and cook so, I let her have fun. Best cakes I’ve ever had! Enjoy your Birthday πŸ™‚

  65. Happy Birthday, Marisa! My birthday falls very close to a major holiday, so all I want is food that I don’t have to cook! Enjoy your day.

  66. Happy Birthday Marissa! This book looks lovely! I bought a copy of another one of your books for a Christmas present this year!

I don’t have a particular favorite birthday food, I just love to share a meal with friends or family. My birthday’s in September, so usually lots of lovely harvest foods around then.

  67. I am a 3rd of July baby so hot dogs and hamburgers always a fav for me, hope yours is a great day and thank you!

  68. Happy birthday, Marisa! I like a buffet for my b-day with offers of my award winning eggplant caponata, bacon jam, roasted tomato jam, garlic jelly and all kinds of cheese, piled on gluten-free bruschetta. A glass of cold prosecco to savor as well! I have your first book that I use all the time. Keep up the good work!

  69. I love to celebrate my birthday by having steamed crabs with my mother and sisters. Since my birthday is mid-August I’m usually frantically trying to put up all of the wonderful produce available at that time of year. Your book would be a great help with that! Congratulations on the new book and Happy Birthday!

  70. It’s a total guilty pleasure, but it was my favorite place to eat growing up, and getting Kentucky Fried Chicken to go was always part of my Birthday celebration. Funny thing is now, there is no Colonel anywhere near where I live, but we now have a new Asian style chicken place that will do just fine when my birthday rolls around again in the winter.

  71. Well, first, it has to be chocolate, second, as in cake! Then chocolate cake throughout the day after having a rather large slice for breakfast!

  72. I love brunch, preferably a buffet, on my birthday. I start with salty specialties but always end with some sort of fruit pastry or croissants with butter and jam. Yum!

  73. My birthday has just passed! I chose mocha for a special treat – chocolate and coffee together. You can’t get better than that! Hope your birthday is lovely!

  74. I don’t know! I don’t think I usually eat something for my birthday other than the broader go eat out and then go to our respective parent’s houses for homemade meals around it. Last year my mom made me a cake that I would love to spend more time with…

    Happy birthday to you!

  75. For my 40th, I made homemade eclairs for breakfast. They were delish! My kids love Monkey Bread or homemade cinnamon rolls for the birthday breakfast. Happy Birthday to you! Hope you enjoy a special breakfast for your special day!

  76. Happy birthday! Hope you have a great day! You share a birthday with my oldest son. As far as birthday food is concerned there has to be cake. I just made a rhubarb chocolate one and am contemplating how to decorate it.
I would love to win a book, I really enjoyed your other books!

  77. Happy birthday! ???

Since I cook all the time which I do like doing, I choose to be taken out for dinner on my birthday. I usually want Italian. Tee hee – some times, well no, most times, we casually let it drop that it’s my birthday and I get a free dessert which I share with my guy. Am I shameless or what!

  78. Happy birthday Marisa!! My favorite birthday treat is either a pie or angel food cake with my granny’s sea foam icing! Definitely a family favorite! Thanks so much for the opportunity, I hope you have a wonderful birthday!!

  79. Hi Marissa, My birthday is May 16 and I will be going to a free birthday movie and then a free birthday dinner at a local restaurant. I love your other books and would love to add this one to the 2 I already have.

  80. Happy Birthday Marissa, have a fabulous day! My favorite bd food is spaghetti w/lots of sauce cooked by my Italian sister-in-law…….so delicious!

In a few weeks I will be 70 and at this age we get to celebrate our bd for a full month (or so my friends tell me).

  81. I go for chocolate for my birthday.
    Happy Birthday to you!
Looking forward to seeing this cookbook in person.

  82. Happy Birthday. Your cookbook sounds marvelous. I am at the age where my Bucket List is beginning to get checked off. (smile) The one item on my list that is proving to be lots of fun is, “Visit a different state each year for my birthday.” So far these states have been checked off: WA, NM, WI, OH, WV, CO, TN, VA & OK.. Have a great day.

  83. My birthday is Jan 1, so I have bday meals & rituals I look forward to all year! I have birthday MEALS on my special day … My bday breakfast is fluffy, custardy French toast dripping with maple syrup & melted butter, with smoked applewood bacon & breakfast sausage links on the side made by my husband & served to me (yes, SERVED) on the couch as I watch the Rosebowl Parade. Because I stuff myself, I usually don’t have lunch, but dinner is Prime Rib, Caesar salad w/ dressing I make myself out of a recipe book from the 40’s (title … With a Jug of Wine … Where can you go wrong there?), baked potatoes w/all the fixings, & garlic Parmesan bread. No bday cake, but we do have NY- style cheesecake that I make the day ahead. Yep, it’s a good day. I wish you lots of good eats on your day, Marissa, too!

  84. Happy Happy Birthday! I really enjoy your Food in Jars Cookbook and would love a copy of your new book. My birthday is January 1 and is sometimes mixed in with the holidays and not always celebrated on its own. I love cheesecake and almost never have it for my birthday, but think I will make myself one this year and maybe use some homemade jam on top!

  85. on my birthday I always try a new recipe for dinner. This year I will cook Pork crown roast, with a side of my first canned potatoes and green beans.

  86. I love having coffee cake on my birthday. I’ve never been really interested in regular sheet cake, so for the past couple years, my boyfriend and his grandma have baked for me her fantastic coffee cake, and then i’ve had to fight hard not to eat the whole cake in one day. The other thing i like is Baskin Robins Ice Cream Pies, where they essentially pack your favorite ice cream flavor into a pie shell (i always choose the oreo shell). I hope you get to have exactly the desert you want for dessert on your birthday, and that both the day and the year are wonderful for you. πŸ™‚ Happy Birthday!

  87. My most memorable birthday food is a whole watermelon. Years ago my husband stopped on his way home from working night shift to buy me a watermelon, it was my birthday and I had cravings! Well to his surprise I had gone into labor , our second child being overdue. Before cell phones. A frantic speeding trip to hospital and all was good. We had a baby boy , but I got to eat my birthday melon afterwards.
Since we share that special day, I always let him pick the cake. Can never top getting him for a gift.
Put my name in the race , thanks !
P.s. We are “May” babies too

  88. Happy Birthday! When I was a kid I always wanted hamburgers for my birthday, now I like to go out for fancy dinner.

  89. I don’t have a set list of foods I eat on my birthday, but if I had it my way, I’d have a nice breakfast with pancakes or french toast, some tasty pizza later in the day, and finish things off with a nice slice of new york style cheesecake!

  90. I used to be all about the chocolate but I’ve been going for the lemon
Especially Lemon Cake with Lemon Mascarpone Frosting. Lemon syrup is one of the key ingredients

  91. My favorite birthday treat? Carrot cake or cheesecake! Covered with preserves I canned, of course!
Happy birthday, thanks for all your work that helps us can and preserve more, and better!

  92. Happy Birthday! My favorite birthday treat is Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cake. Bonus point for double fudge in the centre!

  93. Pretty much any cake is okay with me! Although I have special feelings for lemon, strawberry, and Italian cream. Have a great birthday!!!

  94. Happy Birthday! My favorite thing to eat on my birthday is anything cooked by someone else. Whether it’s my husband and kids or going out to eat, doesn’t matter!

  95. Happy birthday!! I’m pretty much up for anything on my birthday EXCEPT store bought cake. I just can’t…I know people mean well, but I would rather bake one (even from a box) or go without. I hope you celebrate your birthday with something yummy as well!

  96. Best wishes for your birthday! I have a chocolate almond cake that I make for my birthday, one serving is your calories for the day.

  97. Happy birthday!! I always ask for my mom’s pot roast for my birthday, it’s the only time of year she’ll make it for me!

  98. Marisa,

I wish you the very happiest birthdays.

As a child my mom would make a german chocolate cake from scratch…you know with the caramel coconut icing? I remember you had to buy whole coconuts then because packaged coconut wasn’t available.

Since my mom passed in the 80’s, people buy me ready made german chocolate cake, but yuk its not the same. Because my favorite pie is apple…now I celebrate with apple pie instead.

    Marshall – Jam Bubba

  99. Happy birthday! Yes, my library system refuses to put your books on their shelves. I celebrate with homemade lemon pudding. Tart and tangy!

  100. Happy birthday! My favorite birthday dinner is a marinara sauce my uncle taught me how to make. Now it’s way more delicious because I learned how to can tomatoes from your first book, so I can use those instead of the store-bought canned tomatoes I grew up with πŸ™‚

  101. Happy happy birthday (as my sister says). I don’t have a special birthday dish–I appreciate not having to make my own birthday dinner so much that I don’t care what someone else prepared/brought home/took me out to. My husband’s mother always made him a strawberry shortcake for his birthday, so that’s his special dish.

  102. Have a great birthday! On my birthday I must have carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. I ak so avoid all regular household chores and go do something decadent like get a massage or pedicure or both.

  103. I love a good carrot cake with homemade cream cheese frosting. It’s the only time of year I can indulge without the guilt. πŸ™‚

  104. Happy Birthday! I am also a May BD – emeralds and lily of the valley.
My mother would let me have a slice of BD for breakfast on my birthday – I especially like coconut cake. Your new cookbook looks great.

  105. Happy Happy Birthday! Hope that you have a wonderful day!
My Favorite birthday treat is a vegan pineapple upside down cake or pumpkin pie!
Never was a huge icing fan, so those are my go 2 requests!
Very excited to read your new book! I would love to make more “naturally” sweeten jams!
    πŸ™‚

  106. Happy Birthday! I don’t know if I have an absolute favorite birthday food, but right now I’m into wonton soup.

  107. Marmorkuchen (marble cake) is what I like for Breakfast on my Birthday πŸ˜‰ wishing you a Happy upcoming Birthday

  108. Growing up in the South our traditional birthday meal was fried chicken and mashed potatoes! My mom would let us choose, but we always chose her homemade fried chicken!! Happy birthday to you and may your meal be a celebration!

  109. I love Chili Verde with Turkey. Until I became allergic to peppers, I would always have Mom make that for my birthday. Since my birthday is around Thanksgiving, we always make it with turkey instead of chicken.

    Happy Birthday, Marissa.

PS: I couldn’t resist responding, but I already have a copy of the book. If I’m drawn, please pick someone else.

  110. Thanks for handing out gifts on your birthday, nice twist on tradition. My favorite birthday food is spaghetti, lots of it, basic meat sauce, lots of garlic, lots of freshly grated cheese.

  111. Happy birthday!!!! I hope it’s fantastic! I love to have polenta toast and homemade chutney. I never considered it my birthday food, but in thinking about it, I usually have it then.

  112. Happy birthday!! πŸ™‚ I love to go out for dinner on my birthday. It’s nice to have a break from cooking πŸ˜‰ My favorite place currently serves up the best chicken & Belgian waffle you can imagine.

  113. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! When I was kid, my mom always made me angel food cake with strawberries. To this day, as an adult, I have made myself that very same cake every single year and it is my favorite thing on my birthday. πŸ™‚

  114. Happy Birthday! Things that I love on my birthday are pie or lemon tart.

I’ve done some preserving out of Preserving by the Pint and I am excited about a book that uses more natural sweetners.

  115. Since I’m a St. Patty’s Day baby, I generally have corned beef and cabbage, but I also love a good carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.

  116. Happy Birthday Marisa! My favorite birthday meal is anything not cooked by me.Extra special if it is Indian Food and a chocolate hazelnut truffle cake.

  117. Happy Birthday, Marissa! While I don’t have a birthday favorite, I generally like anything with figs and ginger.

  118. First and Foremost! I wish you a blessed and Happy Day for your Birthday!~ May the sunshine be poured down on you! For my birthday, I like nothing particular. But I am quite fond of vegetables and Lobster. Yes, Lobster from CT!

  119. Happy birthday Marisa! My favourite birthday food is Indian takeout from Amaya (an amazing Indian restaurant in Toronto), followed by raspberry chocolate cake. Those things don’t exactly go together. But they do on my birthday.

  120. Happy Birthday! My own birthday is on the 10th and I celebrated with a casual trip to my favorite bakery in Seattle for rhubarb danishes! So delicious! However, at home I had made some strawberry syrup which we ate on vanilla ice cream, and I think that is my favorite think to eat on my birthday.

  121. I’m an Independence Day baby (July 4 is NOT the real independence day!), so there’s lot of lovely fresh fruit around to make into a pie or strew over cake and ice cream. πŸ™‚ And happy birthday to you!

  122. My mom always makes me a Strawberry type cake that’s absolutely horrible for you and completely delicious. We live so far apart now that I would love to have one any day!

  123. Happy birthday, Marisa!
I enjoy a savory dish for my birthday- love Thai and Indian food.
Congratulations on your new book, I am new to canning and I look forward to learning from your work.

  124. I have so looked forward to this book coming out.
I hope your birthday is full of all your favorite things! Happy Day.

  125. Happy birthday Marisa! My actual birthday was on Thanksgiving so that is the day we celebrate it, even though the date for Thanksgiving is different year to year. So one of my favorite things to eat on my birthday is turkey!

  126. Happy birthday! I hope someone else does some healthy and delicious cooking for you to celebrate your day! My birthday is at the end of April so I am always happy to have some Spring veggies for my birthday, particularly if local asparagus is in season. And I must have chocolate to end the meal πŸ™‚ Enjoy your day!

  127. Happy Birthday. May 14th is also my birthday. I like to eat anything containing the first deliciously sweet strawberries that are just getting ripe about this time. DEEEE-LISH!! And I usually spent the night sitting in a big field watching the lightening bugs πŸ˜‰

  128. Have a fantastic birthday!!! I hope you are celebrated well and are surrounded by love! Thanks for blessing us with your book on your day!

I can’t wait to try the sweet onion relish and find some fun uses with these natural sweeteners I have here in my house.

  129. Happy birthday! My birthday is Sunday and my friends and I will be making lots of birthday cocktails featuring rhubarb, strawberries, and elderflowers, cause they’re all going like gangbusters in our gardens right now.

  130. What I’d most like to eat are soft shelled crabs, but they aren’t in season during my birthday time of year. But I do usually have seafood of some sort. I wish I lived in New England. I’d have fish or seafood every day. Fresh seafood in the Midwest is either hard to come by, or so ridiculously costly that I might as well just get a plane ticket and fly to the coast to eat. Congrats on the book!

  131. My favorite is a nice slice of pizza. I don’t indulge too much in pizza on a regular basis, so that’s my little treat to myself.

  132. Happy Happy Birthday!!
    For my birthday,
I always make myself the lightest, fluffiest gluten free coconut cupcakes, served warm out of the oven with some coconut icing and toasted coconut on top. Heaven Heaven Heaven
I wish I could beam one to you!!

  133. Happy joyful birthday!
When I was a vegetarian and living with someone who didn’t eat vegetables on my birthday I made them make me mashed potatoes and tofu dogs and creamed corn and anything else that I could think that would just disgust them but I would enjoy . It was my birthday revenge and I enjoyed it fully !

  134. Happy birthday! In our family you got to choose your birthday dessert and my favorite has always been brownies, made from the box. None of that fancy stuff, just chewy brownies from Betty Crocker.

  135. Happy Birthday Marisa! My favorite birthday foor is most definitely bean tacos! I love to top them with different salsas and hot sauces. So. Freaking.Good! Enjoy your bday and eat lots of yummy things πŸ™‚

  136. Feliz Cumpleanos , Gefeliciteerd and Happy Birthday! Fave birthday food would have to be a delicious homemade pasta!

  137. My birthday is close to Christmas, but my mom still takes the time to make me cheesecake for my birthday. Cheesecake remains one of my favorite foods to eat even when it is not my birthday.

  138. Cheesecake! But, like, vegan cashew cheesecake. Dairy hurts my belly, but I will take the dairy free version happily on my birthday!

  139. Happy Birthday! I just celebrated my 33rd this week, we went out for Cajunβ€”filΓ© gumbo, cornbread with jalepeΓ±o butter, and blackened catfish with cheese grits.

  140. Happy Birthday! my birthday is 2 weeks after yours and my favorite food is Pizza, the cheesiest the better.

  141. Happy birthday to my fellow May baby! (I was May 3rd.) There definitely has to be chocolate in some way, shape, or form on the day. An absolute must.

  142. Happy Birthday! I usually go for coconut cake on my Birthday. I guess it’s something about tropical flavors in February.

  143. Happy birthday! The book looks beautiful, and so useful. We are planting a ton of berries on our property so I’d love to learn how to preserve them without sugar. On my birthday I like to have something with fresh blackberries, since they’re in season in early August – usually a blackberry shortcake with fresh whipped cream.

  144. Happy Birthday! Mine is the 24th. I don’t have foods I associate with my birthday, but I do like to surround myself with flowers – Trader Joe’s is my best friend around this time! I’m so looking forward to reading the book, especially with the 5 pounds of honey I have in my basement (long story).

  145. Since I was a teenager (I turned 46 one month and 1 day ago) my birthday meal has been Spanakopita (Moosewood recipe) followed by either peach pie or some version of lemon dessert-recent favorite has been Shaker lemon pie. Happy Birthday, Marisa!

  146. Happy Birthday Marissa!!! Definitely chocolate, and whipped cream, homemade
of course! Maybe a mousse of some kind?

  147. Happy Birthday! Mine is still a ways away, but when it arrives I’m hoping someone will make me chocolate chip cookies!

  148. Happy Birthday! For my birthday, I always request that I don’t have to cook. It’s a nice respite for a day. πŸ˜‰

  149. Happy Birthday!! Woo hoo! My favorite goodie to have on my birthday is flan…it’s my FAVORITE πŸ™‚

  150. My birthday is October so I love pumpkin pie made completely from scratch – using pumpkin from the garden and a homemade sweet pie crust.

  151. We’re celebrating my husband’s birthday on Saturday! I’m most looking forward to the Elvis Pie – peanut butter cookie curst, banana cream filling, candied bacon on top!

  152. Happy Birthday Month!

My birthday is at the end of July and I am not a hot weather fan. I like fish or seafood on my birthday…sushi or crab cakes or fresh fish make me smile. A pile of garden vegetables with the fish makes me even happier.

  153. Happy birthday, Marisa!

Since my birthday is in July, I almost always try to have ice cream… Usually something with chocolate in it. πŸ™‚

  154. Happy birthday! I’m a traditionalist on my birthday. Give me a big slab of yellow cake with chocolate icing!

  155. Happy Birthday! Growing up I always asked for lasagna as my birthday meal from my mom. Also, never cake. Weirdly I don’t like cake but icing is delicious πŸ™‚

  156. My birthday was the same day at the scheduled release for your book! It was on my amazon list, but I didn’t get a copy – I did get a wonderful book on infusions, though!

Growing up we always had a great homemade meals (steak and potatoes, normally, so good!) with boxed cake for birthdays, but now my greatest desire on my birthday is the incredible Princess Torte from Wuollet Bakery in Saint Paul.

  157. when my kids were preteens, they would make frozen pizza on my birthday and we would all sit on the couch and watch Caddy Shack. Not my favorite food or favorite movie, but one of my favorite memories.

    Happy Birthday, Marisa! ????

  158. Happy Birthday, Marissa! I celebrated my birthday last month by… moving! After we got settled, my husband took me to my favorite Asian dumpling place near where we live. Best hot and sour soup hands down! Always get the spicy dumplings, garlic green beans too.

  159. Happy Birthday!!!! My favorite birthday meal differs from year to year! There are too many to choose from!

  160. Happy Birthday. I like to have a wiener roast, with homemade ketchup and pickle relish on the roasted dog of course.

  161. Happy Birthday. On my birthday I like either a Boston cream pie (which you probably know is a cake), or a raspberry custard pie (an actual pie).

  162. Hi – my birthday is in August, so I love veggies and kabobs on the grill, with fresh-picked corn on the cob. I am salivating just thinking about summer foods! Happy Birthday to you – enjoy the day!

  163. Happy Birthday, Marisa! I hope you have a wonderful day and a terrific year. Since my birthday is near the end of July, I love having a rack of ribs slow roasted on the barbeque with some homemade potato salad and coleslaw, finished off with homemade chocolate cake and ice cream! Enjoy your day!

  164. Happy birthday!! My birthday requirements generally involve tomatoes and s’mores. Not in the same place =)

  165. Happy Birthday! My birthday has to involve Strawberry Shortcake! Have a GREAT birthday, eat well, love more!

  166. Happy Birthday!
I love pie, and the hubby is not a fan, so I usually request a pie for my birthday. As a late summer baby, I tend to end up with peach melba or peach blueberry, which is just fine with me.

  167. Every year on my birthday, my mom makes me lemon meringue pie all from scratch. I love it.

    Happy Birthday to you!

  168. I’ve got your beautiful book right here, Marissa, but I just want to wish you a very happy birthday, with all YOUR favorite foods πŸ™‚

  169. I’m going to enter for Ben instead of myself πŸ™‚ His favorite/requested birthday treat is my salted caramel & chocolate french macarons because his friend who is allergic to gluten can have them too. Hope you enjoy your birthday weekend!

  170. Hope your bd is a great one!! My bday meal is the same each yr. My hubs & daughter help me cook up a seafood feast with baked potatoes, salad & my own version of cheddar bay biscuits.

  171. Happy Birthday!!!! I love nothing more than finding an entire round of courses of things I’ve never eaten before and trying them on for size. There have been some disappointments, but I’ve added hundreds of things to my kitchen repertoire that I never would have tried otherwise.

  172. Happy birthday! I love Hot German Potato Salad. It’s hard to beat potatoes with bacon, onions, & vinegar, among other things

  173. Happy Birthday! On my birthday I like to eat ice cream home-made for me by my sister. For a long time it was Earl Grey Tea flavored, but lately nectar has been the flavor.

  174. My favorite cake is Angel Food. It’s sorta hard now that it’s mostly my parents’ and me celebrating. But twice my Mom has made a cake from scratch rather than buy them from the store and that makes all the difference.

We both like to let it go stale as a treat so the cake is all eaten.

Covered in fresh strawberries and whipped cream is one of our standards.

My Mother will sometimes make a favorite meal to go with it. Chicken cacciatore most likely.

Or sometimes we’ll go to a local German restaurant so I can have schnitzel and kΓ€sespΓ€tzle, which is only on their Oktoberfest menu.

  175. My family all liked the same birthday meal, made at home: prime rib, mashed potatoes, cauliflower and cheese casserole with either chocolate cake with vanilla frosting or a strawberry filled angel food cake with whipped cream.

  176. Happy birthday, Marisa! My favorite birthday treat is a chocolate and cranberry cake that my husband is famous for (in the family).

  177. Happy Birthday!! Fruit pie!!! My favorite is strawberry rhubarb, but it is not in season on my birthday, so really any tart fruit pie!

  178. Happy Birthday Marisa! My birthday starts a week of birthdays in our family. I don’t care for cake much, so I go for something like fruit pie or coconut flan. I also love any dessert made with guava owing o my Cuban heritage.

  179. Happy Birthday! My favorite bday treat is a tarte with Italian plums topped with sugar roasted almonds and whipped cream. Simply delicious.

  180. When going out with the family, we go to one of my favorite Lebanese places for dinner and get Mezza for everyone!

At home, we might get a half-dozen donuts and cut them all up and share them.

To make? Not so much a dish to have as the making. One of the best birthday presents is when my family gets the hell out of the house and lets me play uninterrupted in the kitchen for HOURS. Especially if they clean up afterwards for me!

  181. Lemon love notes is what I would love to eat EVERYDAY, including my birthday. Would love to have your book, even tho, it is YOU that should be receiving gifts.

  182. Wishing you the happiest to you from me all the way in bellevue, nebraska! At my house, I love making Minnesota wild rice soup with herby quick bread and a thunderbird salad for my birthday meal πŸ™‚

  183. I love to have two things on my birthday: Cinnamon Flop, a coffee-cake-like cake that was a staple of my mom’s when I was growing up and now that she’s gone my daughter makes sure I get it. And PIE. I love a birthday pie more than anything. But only if it’s made by me.

  184. Happy birthday!
Just learning about all your cookbooks and I’m so intrigued!
My favourite food to have on my birthday is either thai or sushi!

  185. Happy Long Life, as they say the South Pacific! Of course another Taurus. Bday cakes in my house were always zucchini chocolate, two rounds sandwiched with strawberry jam, all from our garden. Still whenever I think of birthdays this is what I crave. I hope you have a fabulous day!!f

  186. Happy Birthday!
I used to always have Alice Spring’s Chicken from The Outback on my birthday, but there’s no longer one in my area πŸ™ However, my husband figured out how to replicate it, so he now makes it for me πŸ™‚

  187. I love Birthday Cake with lots of frosting. But since the family doesn’t get together like we used to, I haven’t had a cake in years. I really miss the cake and the family gathering together.
    Happy Birthday to You!

  188. Happy happy birthday! Roast beef with mashed potatoes and old fashioned whacky cake is my birthday favorite!

  189. My birthday is coming up, too. I plan to eat chile rellenos, truly one of my favorite foods and an excellent vehicle for melted cheese, a bit of crispiness, all with the green of poblano peppers.

  190. have an exciting birthday!!!
for my birthday i’m happy with anything i don’t have to prepare or clean up after!
may yours be as leisurely as that!

  191. Happy birthday! To me, celebrating my birthday isn’t so much about a special meal as it is something bubbly to drink. I love champagne/sparkling wine and it is always present at celebrations.

I’m excited about this book. Its two siblings want it to come to my house to keep them company. I have had some of the same issues with preserving (so much sugar, what do you do with it all, etc…) and am excited to try this one out.

  192. Happy Birthday! I love my mom’s homemade lasagna and what I really miss is my Grandma’s three layer yellow cake with lemon filling and some kind of amazing white cooked icing. It was delicious. I did a lot of preserving last year and I, too, am looking for ways to lower the refined sugar content.

  193. Happy Birthday! Growing up, I always asked for a lemon cake with lemon icing for my birthday cake. I still love lemons, and make your lemon curd every winter with lemons from the Lemon Ladies.

  194. Yay! Congratulations on your new book! Food is actually the main (only?) way we celebrate birthdays around here, but the food changes every year. However, I will say that a nice piece of halibut and some green beans will do it for me every time. πŸ™‚ Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

  195. Happy birthday! I think that my favorite birthday food is chocolate. In any form. Ice cream, cake, a fancy chocolate bar. And a nice bottle of wine, please. Yum! Hope you have a good one.

  196. Happy birthday, Marisa! I absolutely love Food in Jars, which your sweet sister sent to us as a thanks for hosting a house party for her and Andrew. (Meyer Lemon Curd by stealthy spoonfuls is my fave!) As for birthday goodness, this past year we went out for dinner and I got cinnamon sugar coated doughnut holes with salted caramel dipping sauce. It was pure heaven. Hope your birthday is equally delicious and heavenly!

  197. Hooray for May irthdays, mine is on Tuesday and although I have to work I will look forward to cake with my coworkers and dinner out with my honey that night.

  198. Happy Birthday! On my birthday, in lieu of cake, my husband bakes me a giant chocolate chip cookie. What more could a girl ask for. I don’t like cake, and I make the ice cream… so with him supplying the cookie, Happy Birthday. Wishing you a wonderful birthday!

  199. Happy birthday! My favorite birthday food is pizza–ideally multiple pizzas where I decide all the topping combos. Living large!

  200. I don’t care for icing or frosting if you prefer, so I would rather have my favorite pie. Cherry Cheese Pie. And Happy Birthday to you.

  201. I know everybody typically loves cake on their birthday, but I always try and find pie! And since I’m in the South, cobbler works also πŸ˜‰ Happy birthday!

  202. Happy birthday! My favorite thing to have for my birthday is “snow tunnel” cake. Basically, hollowed out angel food cake, filled with chocolate pudding and then iced with cool whip!

  203. Happy birthday! My favorite birthday meal (since I was a little kid) consists of my dad’s baked chicken, real mashed potatoes, and corn on the cob.

  204. Happy birthday! I like to have chocolate cake for my birthday, and shrimp, but not in that order. πŸ™‚

  205. I my love birthday cake; sometimes a spice cake, or white or yellow but I always make it for myself and I love sharing it. The only downside is my birthday is on Christmas and with all the other food I sometimes feel bad serving a piece of cake after Christmas dinner. This year due to a happy accident, I had a bunch of vegan chocolate chip cookie dough in the freezer. We dipped it in chocolate and that is what we ate in place of cake! Happy Birthday Marisa! I hope the sun shines on your day!

  206. Happy Birthday! Hope it is wonderful! My family has been enjoying all of the preserves we’ve made from your first two cookbooks and we can’t wait to try sugar free options from your new book. Yay!

So, every year for my birthday I have carrot cake, but it has to be my mom’s recipe!

  207. Happy birthday! I love to celebrate with an extended brunch with all kinds of savory and sweet things, several home made jams as spread for a fresh baked brioche loaf included.

  208. Happy birthday to you! My birthday is this month also and I’m hoping for pie. Any kind of pie but berry or strawberry-rhubarb comes to mind at this moment.

  209. Happy Birthday Marisa!! Thank you for your for all of sweet books that bring such joy when I am in search of fun new canning ideas. I hope you have a lovely birthday!

My favorite birthday food would be a chocolate crossaint with a perfectly made cappicino! Cheers.

  210. Happy birthday! I enjoy a total indulgence at Texas DE Brazil, a steakhouse where they fire roast dozens of different meats and walk by your table over and over and stuff you to bursting. Lol.

  211. Happy birthday Marisa! I own your first two books and this one would be a wonderful addition.

My birthday is coming up a week from Monday and I have big plans for a fancy sushi dinner. When it comes to dessert, though, I don’t really have a favorite. I love fruit pies and chocolate cake equally, so we’ll have to see what piques my interest when the time comes.

  212. I never like to make a big deal about my birthday, but will always be willing and able to eat a burger from some place I haven’t tried yet. of course with a side of pickles….

    Happy Birthday!!

  213. Well, pffuey! Was going to wish you a very Happy Birthday without the instruction to do so! Still – have a terrific day.

    There. That’s done… πŸ˜‰

  214. I love any home made cake for my birthday. After so many years of store bought super sweet cake, home made only. I hope someone makes you a cake today, Happy Birthday!

  215. Happiest birthday Marisa! Hope you have a fantastic celebration and thanks for the giveaway generosity. My birthday favorites are made by my momβ€”for the meal my choice is always SpΓ€tzle with Goulasch and for dessert angel food cake with fresh strawberries and raspberries and fresh whipping cream. And I always love a glass of sparkling wine to accompany πŸ˜‰

  216. From my vegetarian days, I’m still a sucker for vegetable lasagna but I’d also have my mom’s eggrolls for my birthday before having a mango dessert as the b-day cake.

    Happy Birthday!

  217. I think my favorite birthday food was probably the salted caramel chocolate cake a friend made for me one year. It was terribly rich, and none of us could eat much despite her pleading that we eat more. It felt indulgent in just the right way.

  218. Happiest of birthdays to you! My husband makes beef Wellington for family birthdays, it is wonderful and not really that time-consuming. It definitely marks a special occasion.

  219. I love any home made cake. However when I was in the hospital with our final (3rd) baby my husband let the others pick out a fancy store cake and now that is their tradition. Shopping with daddy for a cartoon cake. I still get to make my own.

  220. Happy Birthday! I have a May bithday as well. Growing up, I never wanted cake for my birthday but always asked my Mom for pie!

  221. Happy birthday to the canning queen! My birthday wouldn’t be the same without my mom’s cherry cheesecake with a graham cracker crust half an inch thick. Now if I only could can it…..

  222. I like to eat German Chocolate Cake on my birthday. The real deal, homemade cake. In fact, I am happy to make it for myself just so I can eat it on my birthday!

  223. Happy Birthday!!! I hope you have an awesome one!! My favorite birthday cake is strawberry shortcake. It must have fresh strawberries and real whipped cream! Yum! Make me so happy! Though I did recently make your whole fruit Meyer lemon marmalade and I think a swirl of that on the cake would be stellar.

  224. It is our family tradition to get takeout Chinese for birthdays. This last birthday, I bent it a little and got Vietnamese (and it was delicious)!

  225. As a kid, my absolute favourite meal for my birthday was my mom’s pineapple pork, with a chocolate cream pie for dessert. Now, it’s more likely to be my family’s favourite pulled pork, and my husband’s delicious chocolate tapioca.

Happy Birthday, you amazing person, you!

  226. Happy birthday! I celebrated on Tuesday, and — though it paled in comparison to my first mother’s day a few days earlier — my sister and I made banana ice cream with caramelized white chocolate from Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams book. That was breaking the mold. The normal birthday treat in our family is Julia Child’s reine de sabaa. Hope you have something as rich (or as chilly, as the case may be)!

  227. I like to eat takeout or my mom’s cooking on my birthday. This year we had sushi! I also like to experiment and make a new cake variety. Happy birthday!

  228. Happy Birthday, mine is on Sunday the 15th. I’m running a marathon to celebrate and will be indulging in my favorite dessert…Dark Chocolate Stout Cake with Chocolate Buttercream, Peanut Butter Buttercream and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

  229. Happy birthday! I love to eat lemon poppyseed layer cake for my birthday. It’s difficult to pull off as a light, tender layer cake instead of the traditional pound cake but when it works, it is great.

  230. Happy birthday! When I was a kid, my mom always made whatever we wanted for dinner. I always picked Chicken ala King. It was a bit of work, so she didn’t make it very often. I still make it myself every year for my birthday in remembrance.

  231. Happy birthday! How SWEET of you to thank of us with a giveaway! I love to celebrate with my infamous flourless chocolate cake smothered in chocolate ganache! Yum!!!!

  232. Happy Birthday Marisa! Amazingly, we share the same birthday!! I hope yours was great! I got to spend it with friends and family, and they know that anything chocolate makes my day…I got a small chocolate cake and flowers from the husband and a flourless chocolate torte from a good friend.

  233. I like a country breakfast complete with home fries and scrapple (if I’m visiting my folks in Lancaster, PA. Maybe fish & chips for lunch. My mom’s pot roast for dinner, then cream puffs!

  234. Happy birthday! My sister and I live in the same city about 250 miles from our parents, so what we eat for our birthdays is always different, but we always make it for each other (:

  235. Happy birthday fellow Taurean, my birthday is tomorrow , and right now a strawberry shortcake is being made by my boyfriend, we will celebrate today and tonite since tomorrow s a work day. Growing up in south philly , my mother would always ask each one of her four daughters what we wanted for our birthday dinner, my request was the same every year, shepherds pie ( ew gross now ) and strawberry shortcake. Yummmm,
Hope your birthday is great, the cake looked awesome !

  236. Happy Birthday to the QOCAP (Queen of Cannng and Preserving)! I have two fave foods I love to eat for my birthday or any day. You can’t go wrong with Shrmp prepared in any way, shape, or form and German Chocolate cake is the bomb! Thank you for all of your inspiration.

  237. Happy, Happy Birthday! For my birthday I always want a cake with pink icing! Last years was raspberry and chocolate!

  238. Happy Birthday! For my birthday, I want my grandma’s chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream or mint ice cream/chocolate cake ice cream cake.

  239. Happy Birthday Marisa! My husband just had his birthday and I made him a chocolate bundt cake that was yummy! Chocolate cake and cheesecake are my weaknesses, but I love any homemade dessert for my birthday! I have both of your other preserve cookbooks and I would love to add this to my collection!

  240. Happy Birthday Marisa, enjoy your special day! My birthday was a few days ago and my favorite birthday treat is a butter cream frosting and chocolate cake. The richer the better!

  241. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! We always have Chinese take-out to celebrate birthdays. I love sweets, so the birthday cake is my favourite.

  242. I don’t really have a favorite food – they’re all good πŸ˜‰ Happy Birthday, and congrats on your newest book!

  243. Happy birthday to you! As far as I’m concerned, May is the very best month in which to have a birthday. My husband, our daughter, and I all have birthdays this month. πŸ™‚

My favorite birthday food is birthday cake, made by my terrific in-house baker (my husband).

  244. I always have pound cake for my birthday but since it’s on Christmas there is no shortage of goodies around. Happy Birthday to you!

  245. Happy birthday! My Mom always made us a special buttermilk chocolate cake for birthdays. She frosted it with white mountain frosting and then sprinkled on coconut.

  246. Happy Happy Birthday wishes !!! I usually celebrate with something sweet In the shape of a cake. . Congratulations on this cookbook! I’ve been canning for many years and recently wanting to get away from processed sugars. Sounds like your goals for this book have been met. I wish you peace , joy and love.

  247. My birthday is New Years Day. It is often cold and snowy, and it usually follows a late night, so my go to food is homemade pizza and brownies or cupcakes. And I stay in sweatpants and thick wool socks all day.
    Happy Birthday!

  248. Happy Birthday, Marisa! Thanks for all you do in sharing this wonderful site and your inspiring cookbooks (should that be canning books?).

Have a fun day and a joyful celebration.

In my family, birthdays means birthday cake, of course! The birthday kid gets their favourite cake. I always go for the deep, dark, chocolate layer cake with sour cream chocolate frosting. Flavourful, moist and so delicious!

  249. Happy Birthday! I, too, celebrated a birthday this month. WE grilled steaks, had baked potatoes and asparagus. But I’d love something with rhubarb for my birthday. It’s coming in and I love it!

  250. White cupcakes with Quick as a Wink frosting. The recipe for the frosting was in a 1960’s/early 70’s Betty Crocker cookbook. I always loved “reading” the cookbook and looking at the pictures when I was little.

  251. Hi Marissa,
Happy Birthday! Birthdays are family occasions around here and we often bbq or go to a restaurant. I usually choose a Mexican restaurant we all love, but this year I opted to cook! We had teriyaki-marinated chicken, corn on the cob, green salad, grilled onions and peppers, and baked potatoes. Yum. I hope your birthday was fun (and delicious). Thanks for all you’ve shared with us in Food in Jars.

  252. Happy birthday! My favorite birthday food is probably sushi — it’s my favorite celebratory food of any kind!

  253. Happy Birthday! I usually just treat myself to whatever special meal/dessert I’m most craving when it comes to my birthday celebration.

  254. Well, what a generous gift you are giving your readers. I just stumbled upon your blog today and am completely intrigued. I will be celebrating my birthday this week and am still trying to decide on a birthday dessert. I hope your birthday was lovely.

  255. Happy Birthday! My birthday is on New Years Eve. So I am usually tried of all the sweet holiday foods. But I still like to make a cake for myself.

  256. Hope you had a wonderful birthday! I have my mom’s shrimp scampi over linguini. A bit more adult than my childhood birthday dinner of oven fried chicken, broccoli casserole and rice a roni. Definitely a child of the the 70s.

  257. Happy Bday! I’m so excited about this book – I have both of your previous books. I celebrate your baking my own cake : )

  258. Happy Birthday, Marisa! My favorite birthday food is a poorboy steak sandwich from Merichka’s in Joliet, IL. I travel 100 miles to have one every year.

  259. When I was little and growing up in Wisconsin my birthdays were capped on both ends with favorite things. In the morning I’d wake up to eggs overeasy with fried potatoes and at the end of the party we’d get to have just a simple cake usually marble with 7 minute frosting.

  260. Happy birthday! Cake is my favorite birthday food. I have both of your previous books and just started canning last year. A lot of people loved their gifts at Christmas this year! thanks for such great recipes. I look forward to your newest book and canning this year. thanks for the confidence and inspiration.

  261. My birthday is tomorrow and my husband’s birthday was yesterday (both May babies!). We plan on celebrating next Saturday with steak and shrimp. We always like to do a surf and turf for our birthdays. I’m not a big cake fan so tend to celebrate more with cheesecake. This year I gave up white sugar, hence why your book would be perfect, and my husband is on a diet so not planning any dessert.

  262. Happy birthday! On my b-day I make it a rule not to go to work, and eat what ever the heck I want, usually ice cream is involved. Have a great day!

  263. Happy Birthday! I love the first book, but have definitely been looking at healthier, alternative sweetener recipes.

  264. What says ‘birthday’ to me, is a yellow cake with lemon curd filling and thin chocolate icing.
    Happy Birthday, Marisa

  265. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I usually make myself a pie. Sometimes I buy a pie but I like making them. I usually get eggplant parmesan as well, but that comes from a restaurant.

  266. Happy Birthday! Mine is the day after yours. I haven’t thought about what I want, but I often have key lime pie.

  267. Chocolate peanut butter pie is the birthday treat I look forward to! Happy birthday, Marisa! Love your books and your blog.

  268. My favorite birthday food has been the strawberry shortcake my mother would buy from our favorite bakery every one of my birthdays as a child. My birthday is in the middle of winter and the strawberry shortcake was so sweet and brightened up the day.

  269. Happy Birthday! I’m a big fan of your previous cookbooks and your blog. As you’ve heard many times, your blog was my gateway to canning and preserving. Best wishes for a healthy and happy year!

When I was young I was allergic to eggs. My mother found an chocolate oil cake recipe without eggs and made it for me for my birthday every year. She also used to make me little cupcakes to take to my friends’ birthday parties so I would have a sweet treat too.

In cake form, it was always two layers of cake with raspberry jam in the middle, topped with cream cheese frosting. It was (and is) THE BEST.

  276. It was actually my birthday the day this blog post was published! And I ate my favorite birthday dessert that day – cheesecake.

  277. Happy Birthday to you!
I have so many things I enjoy, though cheesecake on a almond coconut crust made with goat cheese and honey with my own preserves might possibly be my favorite!

  278. Happy Birthday!!! My favorite thing to eat on my birthday is a lemon cake with a lemon buttercream icing.

  279. Happy Birthday! My favorite treat is cheesecake. We usually make our buy a plain cheesecake then we open several jars of my homemade home canned jams. Favorites are seedless boysen/marionberry jam and the raspberry, cherry, rhubarb jam. So much more flavorful on a wonderful occasion.

  280. Happy birthday! I love my mom’s homemade coconut cake on my birthday. Would love your book. Thanks for the chance!

  281. Ooo, Happy Birthday! It’s also my nephews and he’s a big foodie, even at 12 πŸ™‚ I’d love a copy of your book to try new things. Thanks for being so generous.

  282. Happy Birthday to you. I like to have shrimp for my birthday dinner. I don’t eat dessert anymore so my special love is to have fresh fruit! Hope that your day is special and filled with wonderful surprises. Of course I would love to get your book, but that goes without saying.

  283. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I’d love to eat a flourless chocolate cake with fresh raspberry sauce, mixed berries and freshly whipped cream on my birthday.

  284. Happy happy birthday. My favorite borthday treat wouls be angel food cake. Growing up it was this special cake for all birthday celebrations. I still remember one birthday when I wa around 8 at my grandparents and my grandma asked me what color to make the merange icing. She didn’t bat an eye when I asked for black.

  285. Well Happy Birthday! My favorite birthday food is always too much cake. German chocolate or carrot cake suits me just fine. Before that I like to get my wife to make me a meatloaf. I know it’s simple but I love it. Just like she would love this book!

  286. Happy Birthday, Marisa! I’d like to eat my gradmother’s Irish Potato Cake Cake for my birthday, the perfect combo of cocoa, lemon, coconut and unexpected potatoes in the mix! Cathy F.

  287. Happy Birthday!

My birthday is coming up next month, but I don’t have a tradition or favorite food that I’m looking forward to. I think I’d like to go out (so I don’t have to cook) and taste some new beers at a local brewery with friends and family.

  288. Growing up, my grandmother would make each family member an angel food cake with lemon glaze for their birthday. It was a box mix, but it was a really good box mix that had separate powdered egg whites that you would mix with water then fold into the rest of the batter. Sadly, all the companies stopped making the two part mixes. The ones out now taste like crap. It takes a lot of egg whites to make an angel food cake so I don’t get too many opportunities to make one. But when I do, I always make the same lemon glaze that my grandmother did and it is my favorite birthday treat.

  289. Happy Birthday! I don’t have a favorite food for my birthday but I do love to make jams, jellies and preserves. I’ve only used traditional pectin and sugar methods, so I was excited to see recipes with other sweeteners used in canning.

  290. My four siblings and I got to choose whatever we wanted for our birthday dinner. Our mom was a wonderful cook and would tackle just about anything. Our choices ranged from pizza to sauerbraten(my choice). Talk about lucking out-I’m the oldest and mom was still cooking strong just before she passed away at 86! Now I just cook it every year for all of us-and we “prosit” to Grandma!

  291. Happy birthday. I hope you realize how young 37 REALLY is!!! My favorite food on my birthday would be an old-fashioned yellow cake with cooked fudgy icing. I haven’t been able to duplicate the ones my mother made, despite my efforts. It’s fun to keep trying, however.

  292. Happy Birthday!
I am just learning about your blog and food in jars cookbooks. I love canning jams in the summertime and I’m on a journey of reducing my sugar intake, so your new book looks so interesting. Thanks for all of your more natural and low sugar recipes!

  293. Anything that I don’t have to cook !! In our family, the birthday person gets to pick where we eat out on their birthday.

  294. Happy Birthday..So kind of you to give us a chance to win a copy of your book on your birthday. My favorite cake is a white cake. When I was young, our baker (neighbor) would make extra wedding cake batter for my birthday cake. So sweet of him. Hope you had a great birthday. Coming back to Pittsburgh?

  295. We pick a new restaurant to try for supper on our birthdays so I look forward to trying something new and not cooking for a night!

  296. Happy Birthday! I know it gross, but I really love overly sweet grocery-store birthday cake. It just taste like birthday!!

  297. Happy Birthday! My favorite food to eat on my birthday is crab legs and cheesecake (not at the same time).

  298. My birthday is this Saturday and I love my husbands chocolate cake! ( Betty Crocker….lol)

Hope you have a wonderful, Happy Birthday!

  299. Happy birthday, and congrats on the new book! I like yellow cake with chocolate buttercream frosting for my birthday. πŸ™‚

  300. Happy happy birthday to you!
Cheese cake it my birthday cake since I was a little girl…everyone found that strange but my Mom made the best.

  301. Happy Birthday! I think you will like 37. I like white cake with white frosting – especially if there is almond flavoring and/or coconut involved – on my birthday. Heresy, I know, but no chocolate for me. πŸ™‚

  302. Happy Birthday! My birthday cake always has to be chocolate and made by someone else because I was once told that making your own birthday cake (as much as I would love to do so) is against international birthday law πŸ˜‰

  303. Happy Birthday! I’m not a big cake fan, preferring pie instead. I love to eat my Momma’s chocolate pie for my birthday, even better when she is the one making it!

  304. I don’t usually have cake for my birthday because I can’t have it (dairy).
This year I found someone who could make a cake that was dairy free. I ordered it to have on
Christmas for one of our desserts (in addition to homemade cookies).
(We have several December birthdays in our family) The cake was a hit. Everyone loved it!
It was a great birthday celebration! Happy Birthday!

  305. Best wishes! Hope you had a wonderful birthday. I’m loving your blog. Discovered you and your books thanks to Dundee Gardens. Unfortunately, I have to work the day you’ll be there. Otherwise, I would have loved to attend the event. Take care and have a great time!

  306. One of my favorite things to look forward to around my birthday is getting together with our family “birthday club”. My husband and I have birthdays close to each other, and likewise two of his siblings with their spouses. We rotate hosting the birthday couple and make any cake or dessert they’ve requested that year, and either play games or just enjoy an evening of nice conversation. This year, my husband has requested Key Lime Pie and I am very much looking forward to it as well!

Wishing you a very happy birthday!!

  307. Here’s wishing you a very happy birthday! My birthday is at the end of July, so I’m able to celebrate it with breakfast and/or dessert that involves those lovely tiny wild blueberries that grow everywhere here in Downeast Maine.

  308. My birthday is May 15th, and I am from western Massachusetts. The perfect birthday dinner is the perfect confluence of late spring foods: pan-roasted shad roe, steamed asparagus, and strawberries for dessert. All from the glorious Pioneer Valley!

  309. First time I’ve visited this site. Like the Naturally Sweet Food in a jar book. Had big garden last year and made whjat I called “refrigerator pickles’ tasted a lot like bread and butter pickles, so easy, very delicious and never lasted more than a couple of days. Use them in and on everything! But—took large amount of sugar. I’d like to try your Minty Pickle Spears and other recipes for Xmas presents. For the small jar sizes and reduced sugar content. I have strawberries—might try the Chocolate Strawberry Jam.
On my birthday, I like Rhubarb Cream Cheesecake. Happy Birthday to you! .

  310. Happy birthday a bit late! I would like a slice of cheesecake with either fresh raspberries or a warm caramel sauce or both!

  311. Happy Birthday to You + Happy Birthday to Me… we share the same bday, Marisa πŸ™‚
On May14th, I had a lovely flourless chocolate birthday cake.
    Cheers to an Amazing Year!!!

  312. There’s nothing that I love more than a rich fruit cake with a dash of rum in it for my birthday, which is in April. Am looking forward to adding Naturally Sweet Food to complement the autographed Preserving by the Pint I’d picked up at your first canning event in Toronto, Canada.
Belated birthday greetings. Hope you had a marvelous birthday!

  313. First off, Happy Birthday!
My favorite thing to have is something with lemon. It can be lemon meringue pie, lemon cake, lemon sorbet, lemon something.

  314. Happy Happy Birthday! I haven’t had a consistent birthday food tradition in years, but when I was really young, my grandmother would visit for my birthday and make a batch of warm, cakey muffins dipped in butter and a cinnamon+sugar mixture. Those were the (birth)days!

  315. It’s no longer an annual tradition, but I still love having ice cream cake on my birthday – it’s a holdover from celebrating at Dairy Queen as a youngin’!

  316. Happy Birthday, Marisa! All the best in the upcoming year. I hope you had a great celebration and lots of chocolate cake. Chocolate cake is absolutely the best birthday cake!
