When I was in high school, I was one of those dorky kids who carried a plastic bottle of water around with me all day, every day. It was just a plain, disposable bottle that I used over and over again (this was long before we knew that that wasn’t such a good idea), but I loved being able to skip the water fountain and have my water right with me.
Though the vessel has changed over the years a bit (I’m currently switching between a wide mouth quart jar and this guy), toting liquid around with me on my daily routine is still a habit. It makes me feel better and more functional. It also helps me avoid headaches, which are my eternal plague.
There is just one thing in life that gets in the way of my water loving ways and that’s the taste of the water in Philadelphia. Even after filtering, it never tastes great. While I still drink vast quantities of it plain and flat, I’m also always searching out ways to tweak and improve it.
Enter the Takeya Fruit Infusion Jug. It has a strainer built into the top, so you can fill it with fruit and water and then pour without hunks of lemon or apple falling into your glass. Thanks to the nice folks at Takeya, I’ve had this jug in my kitchen since the summer and have put all manner of berries, apples and stonefruit into it. I am as smitten with it as one can be with a hunk of BPA-free plastic and silicone.
These days, my favorite combination is sliced apple, lemon and ginger (for best ginger extraction, crush it a bit before adding it to the water). I realize that the same thing could be done with a jar or other vessel, and I’ve done just that many times in the last few years. But having a pretty jug designed precised for the task makes it slightly easier and more fun.
I tend to keep it in the fridge and refill it throughout the day with fresh water and I drink. The combination of fruit and chill transforms Philly’s funky water into something quite tasty. I’ve also been known to pop a handful of fresh herbs like mint or lemon verbena in there when they’re handy. Oh, and see that picture up there? I did that to show you that it is entirely leak-proof. A definite virtue.
So, those same kind Takeya folks have given me one of these raspberry-colored, fruit infusion jugs to give away to a Food in Jars reader. If you want a chance at it, here’s what to do…
- To enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this post and tell me what combination of fruit you’d put in your fruit infusion jug.
- Comments will close at 11:59 pm eastern time on Tuesday, November 15, 2011. Winner will be chosen at random (using random.org) and will be posted to the blog on Wednesady, November 16, 2011.
- Giveaway is open to U.S. residents only (apologies to my more far-flung readers).
- One entry/comment per person, please.
Disclosure: Takeya gave me the jug pictured above and are provided the one for this giveaway. As always, my opinions are still all my own. It’s a good product and I’m happy to be able to share it with you guys.
Update: My contact at Takeya just told me that they’re going to be hosting a Twitter party on November 15 with more chances to win their products. Click here for more information!
I have plenty of frozen raspberries that would find a nice home in this.
I love cucumber water!
Lemon and mint sounds perfect!
ginger and lime
I love citrus and herb water. What a cool gadget.
Oh, that would be so useful! I would probably infuse it with my current flavor obsession: ginger and rosemary.
I love this! I think I would go for mint and limes for some sort of mojito thing.
i would start basic, lemon-limes-oranges….but ginger & apples sound yummy too!
Ooooh…rosemary and orange/grapefruit, for sure. You can just never go wrong with rosemary, and it goes so deliciously with citrus.
I would try lemon and mint.. or ginger and mint…
A citrusy mix of lemon, lime and orange sounds good !
lavendar and ginger would be my fav with a touch of lemon
Just some nice slices of cucumber to really freshen up a glass of good ole H2O.
I’d like to try strawberry kiwi
Since I am commenter # 415 all the great combos have already been suggested! But I would probably try cranberry, ginger & lime first then experiment from there…
Melon! I love watermelon pieces in my water — this would make those floating chunks easier to deal with 🙂
Actually, I think I would try the apples and ginger combination, it sounds so refreshing!
oranges, lemons and limes with a little stevia
Watermelon and lemon balm leaves:) Yum
I’ve got some frozen grapes that would go wonderfully in this charming pitcher. Great giveaway!
I’d flavor the water with blackberries, red or purple plums, and lime!
Blueberries and cranberries!
This summer, my mom and I made a nice drink for a picnic by adding lemon juice to water, along with some basil and mint out of the garden. So refreshing! I love this jug!
Prickley pear fruit and lemon-gorgeous color and yummy too
Any combo of berries would be yummy!
Marisa,
I am insanely jealous of your swag. Truly. I’d like to try some pomogranate combos – ginger, anise, etc.. Yum!
Orange, mint and pomegranate.
I work in a garden where we have raspberry and blackberry plants. It would be great to grab a handful and have delicously flavored water all day!
At this time of year, I would put apples and cranberries. Thanks for a great giveaway!
Oh I would love it with fresh picked raspberries, ginger and mint. So refreshing. But this time of year your combo sounds really good. Your website rocks and I look at it every day. Have just started canning this year and having a blast. Even my husband is getting involved and making his own to send to friends. Loving it.
i’m a citrus lovin’ girl. i’d add a bit of sliced lemon, lime, and orange to mine. with a sliced cherry or two on top.
Mint and ginger!
Ginger and LIME!! This is my favorite combo of all time.
I am going to be adventurous and pick mango and apples and pineapples-yum
Raspberries! The best fruit in the world (in my opinion, of course).
Raspberries and Lemons! My favorite combination!
I would infuse cucumbers with vodka, skip the water.
I would start with apples and then try a lot of different fruits.
I’m confused about why one would need this plastic pitcher.
You all have such great ideas for what you would put into these things and I hope you actually make them without needing to win the advertised product. It looks like a pitcher. A pitcher with a lid?
(This is not a contest entry)
Here in WI we have little in the way of fresh fruit (in season) right now. But since I still have a bushel of apples in the refrigerator, I’d use apples and some lemon as you did and maybe a few crushed cranberries or some pineapple sage which is still alive under the leaves.
a while ago you asked for fall food ideas. I had said something about kale stuffed pumpkin and I thought the recipe had come from you. I was wrong. it was from Tea & Cookies. It is sooooooo good. I wanted to share, because I love it so much and it is great November food.

I would make a basil and berry water. Raspberries are what’s in my fridge today!
Cucumbers and lemon!
Blackberries and peaches. I have plenty of both in my freezer.
The thought of ginger infused water sounds amazing! I think I’d mix that with some lime and maybe pineapple? Who knows…
Count me in for strawberries and lemon. Though I’m sure my son would come up with a much more interesting concoction (he’s like that)
Karen
mmmmm, maybe some berries and lime? that sounds good…
lemon and mint!
I think apples, ginger and cloves would be a great combo for this time of year.
I would definitely put apples and pears in at this time of year! Yum!
This is such a neat idea. I’d try lavender and lemon thyme. Yum!
I like orange and lemon but in the summer I love cuke slices in mine 🙂
I would put lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and ginger. Instead of tap water I would use coconut water because the plain stuff is cheap but the flavored stuff is expensive so why not make my own.
I would find kefir lime leaves and add some lemon. Would love to try this jar!
blueberries, peaches, and thyme!
I recently made white sangria with sliced apples, lemons and pomegranate. I would do that again in a heartbeat!
Yum!
I love apples and mint in my water-or anything citrus. Thanks for the giveaway!
Blackberries, peaches, and a little lime sounds good to me!
Since it’s autumn, pomegranate and oranges!
I’m thinking Blackberries and oranges…mmmm.
In my water I’d add pomegranate, a lil’ lime, and some ginger. Tasty!
meyer lemons and a tiny spoonful of honey!
I’d add mint and pineapple, or ginger and lime, or pomegranate or…
Mint!
I’m such a purist….. I’d probably just stick with lemon.
I would do raspberries and lemon & maybe try adding a bit of ginger.
I would love to try a combination of berries – raspberries, blueberries and strawberries maybe? Or perhaps apples and pears..Oh man that sounds yummy.
This would be perfect for the lemon and lime slices I dehydrate and save for winter!
Simply apples and pears.
maybe apples and strawberries or blueberries with a touch of cinnamon. or maybe just
some apples and cinnamon and nutmeg
yum
Apples and ginger
Blood oranges and ginger.
Yum! Sign me up. Regardless, I’ll be making some infused water for myself.
Blackberries and blueberries, oh my…
Cucumber, lemon and ginger I think. Or lychees. Or green apples and raspberries. Or blackberries and pears…. or….
I would put some of my massive amounts of frozen blueberries from this summer – that I am STILL working my way through! – and some little sliced-up limes in there and pretend it was not snowing and snowing and…
The apple, lemon and ginger combo sounds good to me!
definitely cucumber, lemon, ginger and mint in my water!
I would probably do either spearmint and lemon or spearmint and orange, not only because both of those sound amazing (though perhaps not the most practical in November) but also because I have every single element growing in my yard! Ok, every element except the water. 🙂
Definately cucumbers and lemon balm.
I’d probably put lemon and ginger in it, or lemon & raspberries. My husband would probably put pineapple sage leaves in it.
I would definitely do lime and ginger.
I might try crushed ginger, orange and pineapple.
Peach and ginger or cucumber and mint would be great I think!
Cucumber and lime. I love a slice of fresh cucumber in water.
This is awesome! Would love to have one in my home.
I’d go with lemon and ginger. or maybe mint and apple.
I love strawberries, lemon, and ginger. And cucumbers and green apple (together or separate).
I’m a citrus kind of gal so maybe some tangerines from the backyard and lime.
Cucumber & mint and a warm summer breeze.
I’m plain in that I like just one type of citrus at a time, preferably orange or lime. Lemon, if I have to. But as I read through the comments, there were some good ideas there. And I never would have thought of adding apple slices.
This looks like a wonderful product; what a clever, simple idea! This time of year, I would use apples with a little lemon and perhaps whole allspice berries. In the summer, berries would be delicious, maybe blueberries with lemon or raspberries with a slice of orange. Thanks for sharing!
I would use strawberries and cucumbers…and then 1,000 other combinations. This sounds fun!
I would combine seckel pears and cranberries, and if feeling special I would infuse some water with cloves and mix it in with the fruit.
I love lime. I’ve never tried apples but want to give them a try since seeing your post.
Pears, lime and a little ginger!
mmmm….. cucumber and lemon? or lime and ginger? those sound good to me, but everyone else has some great ideas too. I’m getting thirsty 🙂
I have pears and blackberries growing in my backyard right now and they would be so tasty together!
Ginger and lemon would be wonderful, and I think cucumber would be good too.
