Canning Discovery Kit

I had every intention of putting up an Urban Preserving post tonight about small batch apricot jam. But instead, I’ve spent the evening working myself into a frothy panic over the cookbook revisions I must turn in tomorrow by 3 pm. Who knew I could get myself so worked up over different styles of fruit measurement?

So I’ve decided to give myself a pass tonight, skip the recipe and move straight on to the giveaway that was going to go at the end of that post. The apricot jam will hold for a day (or two). I know you guys understand.

The nice folks at Ball have given me one of these nifty Home Canning Discovery Kits to give away to a lucky Food in Jars reader. These are great for beginning canners, as well as those of you who are fans of smaller batches. That green plastic basket can stand in for canning racks and large pots and will work in any pot that will hold it (and provide a bit of boiling room up at the top).

Here’s the “fine print”:

  1. To enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this post and tell me what you’ve canned most recently. If you have a blog and wrote about that particular canning endeavor, feel free to leave the link.
  2. Comments will close at 11:59 pm eastern time on Thursday, July 21.
  3. Giveaway is open to U.S. residents only (apologies to my more far-flung readers).
  4. One entry per person, please.

Disclosure: Ball (aka Jarden Home Brands) has provided the canning kit for this giveaway. While they didn’t send me a canning kit (the pictures above were from a giveaway I ran last year in which I bought the kit myself), they did send me some of their new canning tools for review (that post will be up when I can wrap my brain around it). Though I didn’t actually express any opinions in this post, had I done so, they would have all been mine and would be totally uninfluenced by the box of goodies. You get the picture.

  • I’ve only canned pickles, beets, mushrooms and cabbage–all my own recipes from a modern Ukrainian cookbook I am working on with my sister–and all were canned “old school” style. I have been toying with the idea of canning more–especially jams and vegetable confits and the Ball home canning kit would make canning super convenient for this budding canner.

  • the last thing I canned was Peach Sweet-tea jelly. I had a handful of ripe peaches from our tree – the early bloomers I guess- and was inspired by my boss, who has this unnatural obsession with Olive Garden’s peach iced tea. I used a maple tea, and the flavor was exactly what I was looking for. Yay!

  • This is my first year canning and I’m hooked! So far I’ve only done pickles (sweet & hot) and zucchini relish. Looking forward to doing a lot more!!

  • I actually just tried your Strawberry-Vanilla jam (in a smallish batch in towel lined pan). I gave away most to my Mother-in-law as she just so happened to help us in a bit of a crisis recently. I’ve made jalapeno jelly, though I’m not sure that turned out so well. Soooo sweet, not spicy. (I’ve no clue what it SHOULD taste like, but this can’t be it. Lol!) And I’m absolutely chomping at the bit to get my hands on apricots and peaches for jam! Sounds divine. 🙂

  • Most recently it was bread and butter pickles. I am getting a pressure canner soon so I will be able to do sooo much more…Can’t wait!

  • Other than pickled beets with ginger and orange the only thing I’ve canned this year is pickled cauliflower with whole garlic cloves and onions tinted with beet juice and turmeric. I plan on doing more of both as soon as it cools down a little. My kitchen gets too hot when I can!

  • Made your yummy Blueberry Butter yesterday! My kids faces were so adorable after eating it on an English Muffin!

  • I last made Tangelo marmalade. It was awesome. My canning from the garden is just about to start ramping up as the garden is just starting to set veggies.

  • I canned some beautiful plum jam with Japanese red plums from our orchard, and I added a little vanilla extract. Best thing ever! I have also made 2 batched of apricot jam, and will be working on pickeling some okra this week. -A new thing for this year will be dilly beans, and an Indian style pickle relish… I love spicy, flavorful foods!

  • I just sat down from working on tomatoes to get them ready to make chili sauce. I’ve cooked them some tonight and will finish them in the morning. I’ve also made strawberry vinegarette and canned it. It was sooooooo good that I plan on making more of it.

  • Woooo i think i am making it in the nick of time! 😀 The last thing I canned was Dandelion Jelly, I had never made it before and had recently learned of the amazing benefits of dandelion! Best part , it grows free in my yard..LOL It is good. There are a few different versions, I made mine with lemon juice and next time I will make it with vanilla bean! It tastes very close to honey spiced with lemon! Quick, easy, intriguing! 🙂

  • The first thing I have ever tried to can is a batch of bread and butter pickles- it would have been ever so much easier if I had owned one of these kits- or a rack for the matter- my makeshift cookie cooling rack had to make do!   • I’ve been “Jammin'” Let’s see, Pina Colada Jam, Strawberry Daiquiri Jam, Huckleberry Jam, and Strawberry Margarita Jam. The weather in Seattle has been perfect for indoor activities the last few weeks, so why not. Raspberries coming next week.
