Giveaway: Set of Three GIR Silicone Spatulas

January 21, 2014(updated on October 3, 2018)

GIR spatulas

When I was growing up, one of the staple tools in our kitchen was the trusty rubber-headed spatula. Known to us as a rubber scraper, it was my mother’s go-to utensil for cleaning bowls of cookie dough, saving every drop of leftover spaghetti sauce, and generally ensuring that not a drop of food was wasted.

However, those scrapers we used to use had some serious drawbacks. The rubber heads never lasted particularly long, they weren’t particularly sturdy in high temperature situations, and they had to be removed from the wooden handles all the time to prevent any grossness from collecting under there.

Happily, the flexible spatula has come a very long way in recent years. They nearly all have heatproof heads and my favorite ones are the fully encased silicone models where the heads don’t separate from the handle. I find that they last a whole lot longer than the previous generations, and I love that they can go in the dishwasher.

One company that’s making particularly awesome spatulas these days is GIR. They are made from food-safe silicone with a polymer core. They are heat proof up to 464 degrees F and are really great for stirring simmering batches of jams and jellies.

Thanks to the nice folks at GIR, I have a set of three spatulas (the mini, the skinny, and the ultimate) to give away today. Here’s how to enter:

  1. Leave a comment on this post and tell me show 2014 is treating you so far.
  2. Comments will close at 11:59 pm east coast time on Saturday, January 25, 2014. Winner will be chosen at random and will be posted to the blog on Sunday, January 26, 2014.
  3. Giveaway is open to everyone.
  4. One comment per person, please. Entries must be left via the comment form on the blog at the bottom of this post. I can not accept submissions via email.

  1. we have unseasonably warm weather in CA – in the 80’s in January! Been busy making granola and kale chips!

  2. So far 2014 is better than 2013, so I’m happy. Plus, I actually managed to can some marmalade this year. Usually I get too busy to think about it until citrus season is pretty much over.

  3. 2014 started off so horrible! Jan 1st that night…I coughed twice and thought ugh… The next day I was so sick. I got the FLU! I’m over the flu but I got a secondary sickness from it. Pneumonia. I’m still coughing.

But, this past week I’ve been canning like a mad lady! Pickles, jams, jellies, all kinds of deliciousness. So, 2014 is getting better by the day.

  4. 2014 so far ok….not enough time for cooking.
Have made lots of pasta & cookies but nothing new or exciting.
Have been making lots of fantastic smoothies! My kids have been wanting them for breakfast. These spatulas would be hugely helpful for scraping bowl or blender! Thanks!

  5. We are having the best year ever so far. We wish for rain. Other than that, we have been blessed with abundance.

  6. 2014 started off well, with a week off to rest up before the winter quarter at school. I got laid off from my job before Xmas, but I’m starting to think that might have been a good thing, considering how demanding my classes have been so far this quarter!

  7. Thank you for this lovely giveaway!
This year began with some health problems for mr and hospital, but all I hope is that my family and the one s I love are all OK.
    Crossed fingers…

  8. I have high hopes for 2014, but January wasn’t quite the golden month of catching up that I had hoped for. Still feeling optimistic, and thankfully am in good health—so many people are under the weather!

Have big plans for my garden this year, and want to take a look at my canning plans and scale back a little I think—focus on what we use, not just what we gift!

  9. 2014 has been a waiting game so far! I’m a week past my due date with my second child. My first one was late too, but everyone assured me the second time around would be different! Once this baby is finally born I think it will feel like the new year has really started!

  10. CA weather has been spectacular, but we are entering a drought emergency, the snow pack is very bad. I am approaching with trepidation canning for the first time! I have heard about your site and books and am gathering materials! I was looking for something really non-threatening and tasty, and I think the orange jelly recipe fills the bill! I am looking forward to embarking on canning, I’ve wanted to do it for a long time.

  11. These are very pretty, I love them! 2014 started out rough, lost a 12 year old niece and my father in law has had to go to a nursing home this past week, but I am trusting the rest of the year will be so much better!

  12. So far, 2014 is treating me well. I feel happier and healthier than I have in a long time. I’m looking forward to all the goodness this year will bring.

  13. So far, 2014 has been a relatively good year for me. Although, in a couple of weeks I am having surgery. Hopefully, that goes as planned.

  15. 2014 in southern Spain began with my curing the last of this season’s olive harvest. Lots of olives in jars. Ready to try my hand at preserving some of our lemons, thanks to another post found on your website.

  16. 2014 has been a great new start after several rough years. So far, I am focusing on projects I have been wanting to do and getting my life back on track. Got job interviews next week and am back in school.

  17. So to start 2014 off, I will be canning for the first time ever – tomatoes. I’m kind of freaking out, but your article on water bath canning 101 has been extremely helpful. Wish me luck!

  18. 2014 has started off well so far. We haven’t had much winter weather like much of the country has, which irritates my kids and starts to worry my farmer husband. I have been looking for a few years for a spatula that is tough enough to get the last of the peanut butter out of the jar. My old rubber one was, but it wore out. Most of the silicone I have tried is too soft, as is the new flimsy rubber one. Maybe these would be better!

  19. 2014 is moving along at a great cip in spite of the fact that they have canceled school 6 days. Yep. Six. Fortunately, my son and I love to cook together AND I have a treadmill.

  20. In all honesty 2014 is not going well. I feel overwhelmed with school and my beloved Grandma is about to leave this world. I have hopes that things will begin to look up soon.

  21. 2014 has been a cold bugger to be sure. looking at all the jars put up last year and working them in weekly meals. spring will come, right?

  22. 2014 has been fine so far. I haven’t done much cooking but I am having fun playing math games with second graders—my volunteer job at the local elementary school.

  23. Robin’s egg blue to brighten a winter kitchen. 2014 feels like a year of emerging for me; I’m trusting happy, which perches on my shoulder more often than it used to.

  24. I am trying to finish up my Masters degree by May, so I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed with stuff to do. And the cold weather is a good excuse to stay inside and work.

  25. I’m in California … It’s been hot like early summer…crazy, i have Meyer Lemons by the buckets…I need to make lemon curd soon !!!

  26. 2014 has been good not for anything in particular but because I think I’ve finally learned to be happy without anything in particular as an excuse (we’ll see how that bears out over the rest of the year). Happy 2014 to you!

  27. 2014 has been crazy up and down! Already in just three weeks so many positive & happy things but at the same time, there are definitely some downers. And ugh. the cold and the cedar!

  28. 2014 has been uneventful thus far. Would be infinitely better if I could throw away my old spatulas and start fresh with some new high tech silicone wonders!

  29. Chaotic is my word for 2014 so far. Had to put the cat to sleep, my mom broke her leg, my mother-in-law and sister in law and nephews moved to my town and work is insane. I am still looking forward to this year, just need to plan a vacation!

  30. So far 2014 has been great had a serious medical problem in 2012 and finally getting everything in order. 2014 is going to be the best year!

  31. 2014 has been uneventful so far- which is a good thing. i am enjoying going through the seed catalogs for next years garden.

  32. Hi, 2014 is a big year of new things to do! My twins are beginning to walk (they are 1 year aged) and my daughter will be 3 year aged: a plentiful of life to discover!

  33. 2014 is treating me well so far, aside from this brutal cold we are experiencing in Indiana. I got a lot of great kitchen gadgets for Christmas so I’ve been experimenting and baking a bit more than normal.

  34. 2014 sees my Christmas tree still standing, as I just had my last Christmas get-together just a few days ago. 😀 I am looking forward to the spring and the first wild edibles to harvest!

  35. I’d rather be warmer (above freezing please). We’re wimps in southeastern PA and not used to this stuff. Other than that, I’m hunkering down inside and relatively happy.

  36. 2014 started out interesting with someone telling me that I should start selling my jams. Interesting thought that I’m thinking about….

  37. The new year is here and along with a kitchen remodel and painting the outside of the house, I am up to my neck in lemons!

  38. This year has been off to an extra busy start! My boyfriend officially moved in, but has been traveling for work all but 5 days. I’m getting ready to break in to the pickle stash though, I’m so glad I made those!

  39. It’s been a bit rough with the kids being sick, but we’ve had some sunshine here in the Pacific NW. Those spatulas are just what I’ve been looking for!

  40. Well, here in Ohio we have a surfeit of snow for a change this year, resulting in several “snow days”( I work at a school). For some reason I was called to clean out closets while mooching around at home in my pajamas. What an adventure! Forgotten treasures rediscovered! Vases, tablecloths, boots..a windsock? 2014 is looking up!

  41. Other than the cold and snow, and cold and snow, and more cold, 2014 is going good. Getting my new kitchen painted and found various items in the boxes that are still being unpacked. Oh, and I am working on my key lime pie recipe. Failure ends up being delicious for me!

  42. 2014 has been an adventure so far – traveling with an infant, the end of my maternity leave, and starting back to work. Looking forward to all the year has in store for my new little family!

  43. You had to love the older spatulas when the ends got all melted and you wondered did any go into the food. Love your blog. Thank You
