Giveaway: Set of Three GIR Silicone Spatulas

January 21, 2014(updated on October 3, 2018)

GIR spatulas

When I was growing up, one of the staple tools in our kitchen was the trusty rubber-headed spatula. Known to us as a rubber scraper, it was my mother’s go-to utensil for cleaning bowls of cookie dough, saving every drop of leftover spaghetti sauce, and generally ensuring that not a drop of food was wasted.

However, those scrapers we used to use had some serious drawbacks. The rubber heads never lasted particularly long, they weren’t particularly sturdy in high temperature situations, and they had to be removed from the wooden handles all the time to prevent any grossness from collecting under there.

Happily, the flexible spatula has come a very long way in recent years. They nearly all have heatproof heads and my favorite ones are the fully encased silicone models where the heads don’t separate from the handle. I find that they last a whole lot longer than the previous generations, and I love that they can go in the dishwasher.

One company that’s making particularly awesome spatulas these days is GIR. They are made from food-safe silicone with a polymer core. They are heat proof up to 464 degrees F and are really great for stirring simmering batches of jams and jellies.

Thanks to the nice folks at GIR, I have a set of three spatulas (the mini, the skinny, and the ultimate) to give away today. Here’s how to enter:

  1. Leave a comment on this post and tell me show 2014 is treating you so far.
  2. Comments will close at 11:59 pm east coast time on Saturday, January 25, 2014. Winner will be chosen at random and will be posted to the blog on Sunday, January 26, 2014.
  3. Giveaway is open to everyone.

  1. 2014 hasn’t been terrible so far. the weather is mild here in portland, oregon and i just canned some delicious kumquats in syrup!

  2. Made some scrumptious raspberry rhubarb jam with some produce I tucked away in the freezer over the summer. Otherwise eating lots of roots and squashes!

  3. 2014 has been great so far! I have been learning how to make so many more homemade food choices and can’t wait to get my garden going! Just need to get to spring first!

  4. Life is good. The snow should start falling in the mountains again so we can go skiing. 2014 has been good to me so far this year. I am happy and healthy!

  5. I started a new job, which I’ve been looking for for 5 years, so I’d say it’s started off on the right foot!

  6. 2014 has been great for me so far, lots of trying new activities but also really settling in after moving cross-country last year. Also just in general, wanted to mention that I first learned about all-silicone spatulas from this blog and got one from Marshall’s a few months ago that is now my favorite all-purpose cooking implement! The all-in-one really does make it a lot easier to wash and not worry about the head coming off into whatever I’m stirring.

  7. 2014 has been good to us. It’s even been sunshiny here in Portland, Or. Bulbs are already putting up green shoots. Makes me want to plant peas already! (But I won’t press my luck that far, yet.)

  8. 2014 has begun busy with no slowing down in sight! Working hard to get our pond and nature trail up and running at our small school, as well as add two more grades making us a k-8 school. Hard, but looks like some positive steps are bringing us closer and closer!

  9. So far 2014 is pretty good. We have had some warmer days here. Got cows moved and a couple walls built on the house. Kids are healthily and doing well in school.

  10. My husband started out the New Year with a motorcycle accident, I’ve had a sinus/ear infection since before Thanksgiving that doesn’t want to clear up, and we’re looking at the worst drought in about a million years here in California, so I have to say 2014 is not getting off to a great start. But today is my birthday, so I’m going to cross my fingers that this is the turning point. If it will just rain!

  11. 2014 has been like summer! My winter garden is very confused with the 80 degree days, but nothing beats getting outdoors with the sun on your face.

  12. Two thousand fourteen has actually been a real bitch, a strict and firm bitch that enjoys her power trip. I had real high expectations for her, too. Surrounded by good, thoughtful, and extremely honest hardworking people, I thought this was our time to shine. But no, she gives us heavy bags of hard work, sweat and tight deadlines. In just a few weeks, our entire year has been setup for us as “ok, we’re gonna be real tired, but probably lose some weight from all this work.” I’m not complaining; there’s nothing as refreshing or empowering as the feeling of accomplishment, but our butts have a 2104 sized shoe-print right in them and we can feel that they’re tacky red stilettos. She probably hasn’t cooked for her family ever. I’d be surprised if 2014 wasn’t some year old single executive who eats fast food carder salad for 100% of her meals and the only canning she’s familiar with is when she opens her caviar. 2014, thanks for letting me survive your punishment and heartless ego mania.

  13. Thank you for love;y giveaway 🙂
2014 is treating me very well until now, by the grace of God 🙂 I got Job 🙂

  14. 2014 is great so far– in the midst of graduate school and looking forward to therapeutic preserving during my breaks.

  15. 2014 is treating me really well so far. I started an awesome new job, have stayed on track with my healthy eating, and am genuinely happy.

  16. 2014 is starting out like a lazy cat, warm, mellow and sleepy. My husband and I are snug in our home when the weather turns cold and during the day we seldom need coats. We are in the high Desert. So far this year the days seldom get below 60 degrees and the nights haven’t been colder then 30 degrees. There was a dusting of snow up on the mountains for Christmas but it didn’t last long enough to even go visit it. That doesn’t mean it will stay that way however. Like many areas of the country our weather is subject to change with no notice. We have it better then some and worse then others and take it one day at a time. Happy New Year!

  17. Your review really makes me want to win the spatulas. I am in dire need of spatulas and was looking around to buy some. 2014 for me is basically just like 2013 so far. Just working hard and trying to succeed.

  18. 2014 is off to a great start! No complaints here, just contentment.
All 4 kids flew the coop last year and hubby and I finally are spending time alone again!
    Life couldn’t be better!

  19. Spent a day at the beautiful sunny Oregon coast in crazy-for-January 63 degree weather!
    What a perfect day.

  20. Hiyaa!! Oh 2014 treating me awesomely so far 🙂 Loving winters, rain, cold 🙂 🙂 Hope it goes same way further too !! <3
    Thanks

  21. Hope the year is like the month of March, because it’s come in like a lion with a bad viral infection, death in the family, and weather that promotes hibernation. Looking forward to spring!

  22. so far 2014 is been very nice to me \(^_^)/ I turn 27 on 5 january and now im reaching my dream to be a profesional chef….

  23. The new year brought many blessings thus far; a dream job come true, a much-anticipated grand baby due in the upcoming weeks, much love and good health and plenty of opportunities to practice my new skills at canning and preserving with the help of a terrific cookbook – thanks Marisa!

  24. So far so good. Just waiting for the Seville oranges to appear so I can make marmalade on Saturday. Given that the winner will be chosen at random, it seems pointless to add that a good scraper is ahandy tool when you’re making jam … or anything else.

  25. So far, 2014 has been good. A wee bit cooler than I like, but not really that bad. I want to start my garden back up!!!

  26. Busy, as it usually is, but very good. It’s been quite cold so I’ve had the chance to make quite a few warm, cozy soups to fend off the chill.

  27. Despite the cold weather, so far so good. Taking a little break from my 2013 canning obsession and hoping that some of the empty jars make their way back to me so that I can fill them again.

  28. My son Gary and his wife Natasha both have birthdays the first 10 days in January so
more shopping right after Christmas. I also found out My grandson and his wife will be
having a baby boy in May – my third great grandchild. Other than those things I’ve been
sticking pretty close to home. Made some apple butter and peanut butter cookies, worked
my crossword puzzles read some books and watched movies on TV. Pretty boring stuff.

  29. After a kind-of-rough holiday season (missing a couple close family members) 2014 looks to be shaping up pretty good so far. Just started planning a short vacation to someplace warm soon to get away from the COLD Michgan weather!

  30. 2014 has included snow-shoeing, hot dog and s’more roasts at bonfires, and re-energized students. Can’t complain!

  31. 2014 has included some much needed down time and extra time with my kids. I am loving the cold weather we are finally having!

  32. So far 2014 has been great. I learned to make/can orange/grapefruit marmalade. It has a nice bittersweet bite.

  33. Having a great 2014 so far! Blessed with so much to be thankful for! If the worst complaint is the constant snows in Pa.,we have it pretty good!

  34. 9 inches of snow here yesterday. I love it…..
Nothing better than having the day off work, watching the snow fall &
    trying out some new recipes.

  35. 2014 is placid and unremarkable so far, which is just fine with me. After a year’s hiatus, I have started making marmalade again.

  36. Great! The weather up til yesterday has been mild, we even got to go fishing several times this year. Looking forward to gardening season and canning.

  37. I feel nothing change sitting infront my laptop 24/7 watching movies and stuffing internet. Stuck in my bedroom and no yet get out from house. My car license not ready yet so I can’t travell the world that i wish entire my life. I hope my 2014 will be more better in my life 🙂

  38. We called these rubber scrappers growing up! My husband and I have argued about their names for most of our married life.

2014 has been giving me a chance to cloister my family and get caught up from the craziness that was a new baby in 2013.

  39. 2014 has given me chance to eat way more pickled brussle sprouts than I should, drink way more wine than is necessary, and play in lots of snow with my puppies. Pretty darn good.

  40. 2014 has been great so far so looking forward to greater things and blessings for the rest of the year! Thank you for this giveaway! 🙂

  41. So far so good – some work travel, some fun travel, some home improvement, trying to eat only responsibly raised meat/dairy.

  42. 2014 has kind of sucked so far in the health department (been sick since before Christmas), but otherwise, it is definitely my year 🙂 Getting my house organized, doing well at work, and at school!

  43. 2014 started off cold but fun! Already Ive enjoyed some of Philadelphia’s new restaurants like Laurel and High Street. And best so far, the CHEESE BALL!

Side note: Ive never owned a rubber tipped spatula. I’ve always been tempted, but for no reason I can understand, I stick to the gnarly wooden spoons in my drawer.

  44. Well, it’s been pretty frigid so far, but I’ve cooked some delicious things, so I think it balances out. I also took a lovely vacation to my favorite city in the world (right in the middle of the polar vortex!), so I’ve been pretty lucky so far.

  45. 2014, so far just fine….we are having more winter than usual, a blizzard today. Great day for knitting by the fire .

  46. 2014 is off to a good start. My DH and I spent several days enjoying the beauty of the Napa Valley in California. Love, love this area.

  47. So far, 2014 has been more than I ever deserve! That is, because we have about 10,000,000 January birthdays in our family :o)
