When I was growing up, one of the staple tools in our kitchen was the trusty rubber-headed spatula. Known to us as a rubber scraper, it was my mother’s go-to utensil for cleaning bowls of cookie dough, saving every drop of leftover spaghetti sauce, and generally ensuring that not a drop of food was wasted.

However, those scrapers we used to use had some serious drawbacks. The rubber heads never lasted particularly long, they weren’t particularly sturdy in high temperature situations, and they had to be removed from the wooden handles all the time to prevent any grossness from collecting under there.

Happily, the flexible spatula has come a very long way in recent years. They nearly all have heatproof heads and my favorite ones are the fully encased silicone models where the heads don’t separate from the handle. I find that they last a whole lot longer than the previous generations, and I love that they can go in the dishwasher.

One company that’s making particularly awesome spatulas these days is GIR. They are made from food-safe silicone with a polymer core. They are heat proof up to 464 degrees F and are really great for stirring simmering batches of jams and jellies.

  • 2014 is great so far! My daughter got engaged to a great guy on New Years and my son is on his way for a weeks visit! I’m a happy mom.

  • Thus far, I’m making good progress on my goals to learn to can more and prioritize exercise. I am working my way through your book – last week was cranberry catsup and this week is lime curd (which I am SUPER excited about!).

  • Hopeful. With several job prospects on the horizon. Maybe after 9 yrs a stay-at-home mom. I can finally get back to work, =)

  • 2014 has required a lot of changing from me, which is not something I handle well, historically speaking. No time to change like the present, though, and here’s hoping it’s change for the better.

  • 2014 has been treating me excellently well. It has given me some great times singing with friends, and a new milk kefir culture. I’d be excited to use these spatulas for the kefir, since you’re not supposed to use metal implements.

  • I have already put up a few jars of quince in white wine sauce, hoping to use it to top some angel food cake for birthdays this winter, I hope to more new canning in 2014, especially ketchup, as well as getting back on track with a healthier lifestyle – better eating, more exercise.

  • So far, I’m still dealing with the remnants of 2013, but by the middle of February, I should be breathing a bit easier!

    And, I totally agree about the grossness that collects on a rubber spatula with a wooden handle… ick…

  • 2014 started with my turning 31 on January 1st. I started a ZUMBA class during my lunch breaks and my 1-year-old son started walking. I’ve got a gallon zip lock of blueberries I picked over the summer and another filled with cut up peaches both ready for jam. Things can only go up from here!

    So far, 2014 hasn’t been too great — it started with me being very sick for a while.

  • 2014 is going great so far….we’ve had some beautiful snowfalls here in north central IL. Being retired I can shovel/blow snow when I want so I get to enjoy it more than those who have to work. Doing more cooking!

  • 2014 has been the best year I have had in a long time!! I am in my final semester of Nursing School. I committed to exercise each day (helps relief stress from school), and to make better food choices for myself. I am actually sticking to this, and couldn’t be more proud of myself.   • So far 2014 is starting well. I have so many plans for this year, one of which is to learn to really cook well! Even if it is just for me.

  • I’ve been getting out the old cookbooks and trying to plan out my meals for the week and shop only what is on my list. This is a try at saving some $ and also nutrition and trying to expand my family’s diet. So far so good. πŸ™‚

    On the canning front, I was able to get a small batch of Meyer lemons so that I can make my annual lemon pickles. Also, I just got back from a week-long Aruban vacation. I cannot complain. ~ksp

Except that the dishwasher gave out over Christmas and I am eagerly awaiting delivery of the new and improved version so that I can spend less time cleaning up and more time cooking.   • This year has been pretty good so far. Living in sunny Southern California, we’re enjoying some lovely weather. The kids had a nice long break from school, but they went back last week. I’ve been able to try out some new recipes with some of my Christmas gifts. Life is good.

  • Although it is colder than we like in central Florida, we are still very fortunate compared to those of you in the northeast who are being hit by a blizzard tonight. We will drop below freezing here tonight and probably for the next few nights, and my dreams of growing lettuce all winter have frozen, too.
