When I was a kid, one of my big life disappointments was that it was nearly impossible to get a keychain or pencil with my name on it without placing a special order (because when you’re six, nothing is more important than having something with your name on it).

When I hit my teens, suddenly my name went through a round of explosive popularity growth and I started seeing it everywhere. By then, I wasn’t nearly as excited about a miniature plastic license plate that said Marisa.

I went through something similar when I first started canning. Back in those early days, mason jars weren’t all the rage that they currently are and so there wasn’t much in the way of towels, prints, or tee-shirts featuring jams, pickles and other preserves.

Then suddenly, canning was hot and a world of kitchen linens, jar chandeliers, decorative mason mugs and jar-related art appeared out of the ether. I was delighted by it and am forever keeping my eyes open for particularly good representations of this canning art.

To my mind, the pickle tea towel from Fisk & Fern is most decidedly in the good canning art category. All of Fisk & Fern’s towels, cards, and aprons are designed, drawn, and handprinted by owner Laura Fisk in her Austin, Texas studio.

    I think the rising popularity of canning is great! I used to can with my mom when I was little, and have recently starting doing it with my young children. Thanks so much for your book, blog, and classes!

  • thanks for the chance! I dont really know much about the recent popularity of canning, but personally, I would love to start canning. I just started gardening this year. I now understand wanting to preserve your excess crops.

  • I have fantastic memories of my Mum creating in the kitchen. Now that I’m starting to learn and make more, I hope that I’m creating the same memories for my sons

  • When I was younger, if I told someone I canned, the next morning I would find canning jars in my driveway. One time there was even a metal funnel, jar holder and jar lifter all in a box with about 30 jars. Now I go to yard sales and ask if they have any canning supplies to sell and the answer is always “No, we can, too”. Can’t even get a jar at a yard sale any more!!! Everyone’s canning. I’m actually happy for that, too.

  • I love that people are interested in canning! I teach canning classes and I love seeing how quickly my classes fill up. I think this is big part of the Grow Your Own and Buy Local movements. Keep on canning!

  • The small batches I make of jam make the whole process from beginning to end very relaxing for me. Maybe other people also find it so. At the end of a crazy week, it’s nice to find a little time to make something that is delicious and so easily shared as gifts for others.

  • Canning went out of style because of the amount of work, but I’ve always known people who can. As a Home Economics major in the late 70s, it was part of the curriculum. I began to can again because I moved to the country and began to garden. I love using my own produce.

  • Canning never really went out of style at my house either. The recent explosion in interest is refreshing though. I’ve been at it 20+ years now. I love preserving.

  • My grandmother canned. I never watched her or learned anything from her. But I do remember that she had this huge room lined with floor to ceiling shelves that were filled with fruites and veggies and jellies and jams. I started canning about 3 years ago. Some things are hit n miss. Like the first time I canned green beans, I followed the recipe to the “T”, blanching the beans, adding canning salt. A few months later, I pulled a jar down to cook with our dinner, the beans were mushy and very, very salty! So, after doing some research, I found that I could cold-pac my beans and omit the salt. Taste much better!

  • I started canning about four years ago. I grew up in a very, no – make that VERY, small town where canning was not a lost art. My babysitter made her own pickles, milked cows and even butchered her own chickens. I love how people are embracing canning as ways of preserving the harvest and having better quality (and more often than not, better tasting) relishes, pickles, preserves, etc. I can make flavor variations that cannot be found at the local grocer. And it is soooooo nice to have a variety of places to get canning supplies because I can always find a supplier with a good price. I was excited to see the blue jars at Target for 8.99 when another local retailer had them for $19.99 (?!?!?!?!?).

  • I have a daughter with a severe peanut allergy, and my son is sensitive to artificial colors and hfcs. He gets the worst temper tantrums and acts very out of control when he eats certain artificial ingredients. Canning has changed our lives! We can eat pickles, sauces, and jams again and not worry about the harmful toxins.

    And the towel is just about the cutest thing I have ever seen!

  • What a cute tea towel! When I was a little girl, I used to tell anyone who would listen, that my mom made the best pickle soup!

    I was raised in a Midwestern family that canned “everything”! As a 60-something Gramma, I continue the tradition even though I live in Arizona!

  • I get teased at work about my jars but when it’s bagel day at the office and I brought in jam to share, no one laughs then!

    My sister made me a cross stitch of “We can pickle that!” (from Portlandia) as a housewarming present, which still makes me laugh every time I see it. This towel would match perfectly!

  • I grew up with a mother who regularly stocked away seasonal items for later in the year. I remember my brother and I dragging my grandma into the rock piles with smart week just to pick raspberries for jam and then making our own delicious raspberry peach jam. I’m happy to continue that tradition and like sharing the simple joy with others.

  • With more and more unknown & unhealthy things being put in our food, it’s a natural evolution for people to want to start preserving their own. And the feeling of accomplishment is pretty great too! Not to mention the appreciation of friends when they are gifted with with your home made goodies.

  • My Mother-in-law canned …..hundreds of jars of green beans, tomatoes, pickles every year….she taught me how to can and I am so thankful. I am happy to see so many people return to canning and understanding better how food makes “its” way to their kitchens.

  • I think that the “now” generation of kids are much more focused on natural and organic items. When I was growing up that was not even known terminology. I have always canned because my mother and grandmother taught me. I am trying to teach my girls and I think it is so much easier because they have grown up seeing me and like the taste of homemade canned items. We just put up freezer jam and will soon do pickles and tomato juice. There is great satisfaction in canning! I leave it out to look at it for days 🙂

  • My ex mother-in-law taught me the wonderful art of canning and I continue in that tradition with my daughter-in-law and anyone else who is intrigued by it.

  • I think the popularity of canning has been increasing as a return to our roots. It used to be that everyone would garden, and then preserve what they grew! im glad to be part of this new change!!

  • I am pleased that self-sufficiency is becoming popular. I learned to can in my early 20’s because I lived somewhere with an abundancy of fruit trees and we needed to do something with all the fruit. Now I love having a skill that people want to learn.

  • I have been canning for at least 5 years now. Not as long as many, but it something we do. I am happy to see other are getting interested.

  • The resurgence of canning’s popularity means that jars, lids and other tools are easier to find, and there’s a wider variety – I’m all for it!

  • I grow my own tomatoes – enough to eat fresh and can. have done it for years. Its a no brainer for me.

  • I too love this. I have grown up with it being part of life because we had too. But, it is something I choose because it feels like something I want to give to my family, it is love wrapped up in a jar. 🙂 It is so neat, I always feel a friendship with those who can and put up food whether by freezing or canning. It feels good and part of who I am as well.

  • What was old is new again! It is great to see people taking food into their own hands (and kitchens) again.

  • I think it is wonderful that people are starting to want to can/process their own food. I hope it continues to increase the local food movement.

  • I’ve grown up with canning…my Grandmother…my Mother…and now my sisters and I can as well, from our own gardens. I thinks it’s a great way to have healthy food for our families to eat, and what a sense of satisfaction when I see all those full jars lined up on my shelves. I get excited when I hear of “new” people discovering how satisfying it is!

  • Who knows… it may be the practicality and money saving attributes, it may be wanting to know where your food comes from, it may be the latest hipster trend. I don’t really care why it’s popular as long as I can still get my supplies when I need them.

  • I think the focus on local, homemade foods (and eating out less) is great and canning is a big part of it. My only concern is that a lot of people new to canning do not take canning safety precautions seriously. I’ve even seen some cooking shows where water bath canning is done incorrectly or incorrect safety information is given out. These shows have a responsibility to educate new canners!

  • I’m thrilled that canning is popular… people get so excited when I bring them homemade jars of jam these days.

  • I too remember those days looking for my name. All I would see was Ann or Anne. My mom never canned so I didn’t learn about canning or get interested in it until my 50’s. Now because of my example my girls are wanting to learn. I love the chances I get to can with them.

  • My grandmother canned, but my mom didn’t. I guess it skipped a generation and since I had a garden at my first home, I decided to start canning, too. I love it!

  • The “recent popularity of canning” approximately coincides with my move to the country. For my first two years in Virginia, I lived in a tiny house with about a square foot of counter space. Then I moved in with my fiance and then spent a year planning our wedding. Now, I’m married, with ample kitchen space, and am eager to find produce at the farmers’ market appropriate for a beginning canner — next summer I’ll have my own garden! p.s. I LOVE pickles so much I buy them by the 1/2 gallon jar, 15 of which served as vases at our wedding a month ago.

  • i think it is amazing that there is renewed interest in what our past generations HAD to do to get through the year! we should all be evaluating our daily lives and ask ourselves if we want to do things simply because they are convenient or if we want to put a little extra effort into something and make something that is WAY better for us! ie: homemade strawberry jam or store bought…. I will take the homemade any day! not only does it taste way better, but I know what it is made with! 🙂

  • The rising popularity of canning is a wonderful thing. With more demand for its product’s Ball has done things like bringing back the pint and a half jar and the heritage jar. I don’t think that would have happened if sales were down. It is also a lot easier to talk about my love of canning without having people stare at me like I am crazy. Now instead of staring at me they ask me questions like “What is in season right now?” and “Where did you get those half gallon jars?”

  • It certainly has become a new thing in my life. We moved out to the country and planted a HUGE garden (Amish lived in our house before us and they had a big garden, so we already had a specific section to use). I canned a TON of pickles, beans, and tomato stuff. It was super fun. I think canning is popular now because the importance of growing your own food is so important…and when you grow your own food, you have extra. Ya gotta do something with it! 🙂

  • It’s funny that the canning craze has become so popular, and yet when I shared with a co-worker that I planned to can 200 pounds of tomatoes this year (because the 100 from last year wasn’t quite enough), he expressed surprise and said you don’t really hear of people doing that anymore. I was shocked! But then, I’m pretty sure that my director of security isn’t hanging around the canning, cooking and preserving sites like I am. 🙂 Nonetheless, it was sort of a reminder that we all travel in different circles despite our proximity to each other.

    And I too, suffered the torture of never having a license plate with my name on it as a child. Casey was not a particularly uncommon name, but it was definitely at that time a boy’s name. Or worse, a dog’s. There was nothing more deflating than being a little girl and hearing, “Casey? That’s my dog’s name!”

  • I’ve been growing my own food & putting it up since college – which is starting to be a long time ago. For years people thought I was strange since I would only eat what was in season locally. Now it seems the rest of the world has caught up with me. Finally!

  • I think canning is gaining popularity due to the increased awareness of healthy eating and whole foods. I love it! Thanks.

  • Did you know that none of those personalized keychain things ever have “Kate”? They always have “Katie” and “Katherine”, but never “Kate”. It’s friggin infuriating. The other day I went to a florist for a mother’s day gift, and I actually found more than one arrangement of flowers in a decorative mason jar for sale! Finally, my hobby is rustic-chic!

  • I love that canning is spiking in popularity, but it is a little boggling to go to social events and have another three people tell me that they took up canning because of my pickles/jams/blogs/they saw it on television.

  • I grew up canning with my mom, grandma and aunts. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized other families didn’t do that, but one taste of mom’s strawberry freezer jam was enough to convert more than one naysayer. Those hours in the kitchen together tought us respect for our hard work and each other and kept us fed all winter long.

  • I think the new wave is fantastic! It is providing an avenue to share one of my joys with my friends and family in way of teaching…. I have done preserves activities in my own kitchen and sharing a marmalade making activity with my mother-in-law of all people. I’m ecstatic about all the time this allows us to enjoy each other’s company!

    Btw, I would love it if you would do a post on how to use watermelon pickles. I have made them, they are tasty, but I don’t know how to use them.

  • I love that canning is taking off. I really enjoy canning in super small batches and savoring my hard work. The marathon sessions are no more!

  • I’m not sure if my grandmother canned, my mother certainly does. Her home grown, pickled brussels sprouts are outstanding! If my kitchen wasn’t so hot in the summer I would probably can every weekend. I’m so happy it’s popular, my girlfriend and I are canning this weekend. We have lots of wedding favors to make!

  • As a girl born in the seventies with a name like Jen you’d think it would be easy to find a keychain but it was always “Jennifer”. And my loving mother decided to name me Jenifer with one N. I feel your past pain.

  • I don’t think it’s a new craze, I think in each generation there are some of us who see the value in growing our own. Preserving our own, so we can enjoy the fruits of our labor year-round, is a natural progression of that.
    But there are still many who just don’t get it.
    I have a friend who thinks I’m crazy for wanting old jars, she’ll roll her eyes at me, and say “It takes all kinds, I guess!”
    She collects golf balls. Go figure.

  • I grew up in a family that did not can. So, I would visit the neighbor across the street and watch her (and help when I could). Many years later, my friend/neighbor taught me. It still hasn’t caught on in our neighborhood (and I doubt it will) They don’t know what they are missing. Oh, and I could never find anything with my full name on it, either. I’m still looking, though.

  • I recently heard someone say that farming and preserving are the “new hipster.” Hmm…

    I agree that this is not a new craze. People have been preserving and “putting up” for eons. I’m thrilled a younger generation is starting to realize the value of it. And kudos to your blog for helping with that!

  • I think that we are all starting to realize that simpler is better, life, food everything. I started canning because I didn’t have the freezer space before it was cool!

    Canning isn’t hard to do – I think foodies are realizing it’s not for grandmas anymore. It’s very safe and accessible once you try it, and it harkens back to a time when folks canned for sustenance & economy – not just b/c it’s trendy.

  • I love to can and preserve food. I remember long hot summers watching my mom sweat over the rattling canner. Then she would always stand back and say “Aren’t they pretty?” whether it was rows of green beans or jars of tomatoes. I think canning, quilting and other home arts are trendy but hopefully will inspire future children to love these things too.

  • The canning boom is a breath of fresh air. I especially appreciate the boon of small batch canning recipe. As a single woman living on my own, the large batch canning recipes just aren’t feasible– small batch is the way to go!

  • I love that canning is becoming more popular! For one thing, it makes it easier to find jars in more obscure sizes. But I think the more people care about their food, where it comes from, and how it is prepared, (and the more people who want to take that into their own hands), the better!

  • It’s a very interesting trend that I have undoubtedly fallen for, but I think the reasons behind canning’s popularity are varied and should be given serious thought in the macro, sociological sense. Whether people are aching to craft something with their own hands in an increasingly non-manual society, looking to become self-sufficient and exercise control over their own food supply in a society that has given up so much knowledge in the interest of convenience and profit, or canning with a more apocalyptic bent, we are all, in some way or another, repudiating some aspect of our culture. My own reasons for trying to eat local, organic, homemade, and cruelty-free are are both political and personal, but I tend to think everyone’s reasons for engaging in DIY culture are inherently political.

  • My mother canned when I was young and my grandmother as well. Now with 3 daughters, I hope to pass this wonderful method of preserving on to them.

  • It’s nice to be part of such a wonderful trend! I’ve had jars for a long long time but canning is a fairly new pursuit. (Just used them for dry goods storage previously.) I understand your attraction to them and nice that it’s being realized in such a productive, enthusiastic way. A jar chandelier sounds awesome!

  • Fridge pickles were my first adventure in canning and I’ve been hooked ever since, jumping into more ambitious hot water canning from there. The popularity of canning and canning-themed items/art is interesting. Partly fueled by the economic benefits of canning, partly fueled by the popularity of “artisanal” food, it seems to have found it’s way into the mainstream on many levels. I, for one, just like knowing what’s gone into what I eat and always appreciate a project that uses up some of the produce from my garden!

  • I think the thing that I love the most about the popularity of canning is that there is so many new, interesting, creative and delicious combinations of recipes to taste and try. Yum!

  • Canning always makes me think of my grandmother. We did muscadine jelly, fig preserves and pears or hot pear relish, sometimes pickles and tomatoes — it always felt like self defense to save us from an over abundance of fruit and veg going to waste in the garden. Recently my friend Joey got on canning kick and he and his mom went nuts working their way through the Ball canning book. Now I’ve tried several new chutneys and pickled watermelon rind! Who knew?

  • In my family, I see the growing interest in canning paralleling my daughters’ interest in gardening, minimizing processed food and being healthy. All good reasons that I’m now teaching them how to can.

  • I love seeing all the cute jar and canning items. However, I think it will be a fad for most people. It is a lot of work and sometimes the dedication will not always be there.   • I’m happy canning is taking off! Preserving local foods is so good for the earth, farmers, and our bodies. However, the many popular art projects with mason jars that render them uncannable make me sad. I shudder every time I see a painted mason jar. Killjoy, I know…

  • I love the towels.. So cute! I love to can my own food, and am happy it’s more popular now especially because it means people are getting healthier…

  • For me at least, the rise in home canning has a fair bit to do with the lack of diversity of food stuff available at the typical grocery store. If I want plum jam, blueberry butter, or dilly beans, then I have to make them myself. (Well, I suppose I could also go on a scavenger hunt through the gourmet boutiques, but that’s more effort than I typically want to put into grocery shopping.)

  • I knit, sew, garden, can. My mother says I’m a throwback, or that those genes skipped a generation, since my grandmothers had the same interests. Unfortunately, many people link those hobbies with “preppers”. *rolls eyes* Nope, just do it for fun!

    P.S. it’s almost impossible to find anything with my name on it.

  • I love tea towels, it’s impossible to find anything with my name on it, and how cool is it that we can preserve our own food and know exactly what’s in it and have it exactly to our liking?!!!!

    I agree with the other process-people; I quilt, I knit, I cook…canning is new to me but I think it’s pretty cool to have something useful to show for your time!

  • To me it seems like the rest of America is finally catching up with the canning and farm-to-table way of life. This was the way we were raised do to living in a rural community without access to supermarkets or produce markets.

  • The more the merrier! It’s so much fun to share recipes and techniques with other people and I think this trend in canning has to do with people’s desires to be self-sufficient. Plus, doesn’t this mean more cans to give and receive? :o)
