Giveaway: Blossom Trivets from Spice Ratchet

black blossom trivet

Sometimes the best pieces of canning gear were never actually intended for use in food preservation. Case in point? The blossom trivet! It’s the best, most flexible canning rack I’ve found in my travels (and believe me, I go through life looking at kitchenware to see if I can somehow use it my canning flow).

I like to use these trivets as canning racks because they are heatproof, flexible, and never break down in the water like metal racks can do. You can take them apart, use them as one long strip, or you can button two together to make a rack for a larger pot.

I have heard from some people that they sometimes struggle to get their blossom trivets to lay flat in the pot when the water is at a rolling boil. The trick for that is that you turn the heat off or slide the pot off the hot burner for just a moment. That will calm the boil and give you a chance to lay the trivet back into place (a jar lifter does the job nicely). Then put the first full jar in on top of the now-flat trivet and it will stay in place. Problem solved!

Giveaway: Blossom uCap from Spice Ratchet

blossom ucaps

For the last few years, my favorite canning rack has been a flexible silicone trivet made by a company called Spice Ratchet. It has always been something of an off-label use though, as I’m fairly certain that they weren’t thinking canning when they made that trivet.

However, the nice folks at Spice Ratchet have recently released a line of silicone lids that are designed specifically for mason jars. These lids come in three different styles, are sold in packs of four, and have a number of applications.

cap n sip

The first style is a sipping cap. The lid snaps snugly onto the top of the jar and allows you to slip a straw into whatever liquid the jar holds. The lid isn’t entirely water tight (because it does have a hole in the top), but would definitely slow the flow if you were to knock it over.

Having spent the weekend with my spill prone nephew, I can see this one coming in very handy for households with kids. This style comes in both regular and wide mouth.

Next is the storage lid. Like the sipping cap, this style snaps tightly onto the top of a mason jar without needing to be screwed down or tightened.

It is leakproof and airtight, which means it is a great solution for both liquids and dry goods, because it will prevent spills and keep moisture out. This one also comes in both regular and wide mouth.

The final style is the flower frog. This jar topper has holes in the lid so you can use it for flower arrangements, clusters of party flags, or even as a cup holder. This lid only comes in a wide mouth version.

Giveaway: Blossom Trivet from Spice Ratchet

trivet

It’s been nearly nine months since I switched from using a round cake cooling rack for my canning rig to the silicone trivet you see above and I wouldn’t go back for anything. I love the trivet at canning rack with all my heart, particularly since it doesn’t impart any funky particles into the water and looks just as good now as the first day I got it.

In fact, the only minor issue I’ve had is that when it’s left in a pot of boiling water with no jars holding it down, it can sometimes float. However, a quick maneuver with a jar lifter and it’s back in place and ready to lift and pad the jars again.

Awhile back, I got an email from the spokesperson at Spice Ratchet, the company that makes the Blossom Trivet, delighted with the new use I’d found for their product. They offered to sponsor a giveaway, to help spread the trivet love even further. I have five (5) trivets to give away to a handful of lucky winners.

If you’re interested in entering the giveaway, here’s what you do.

  1. Leave a comment on this post and tell me about your canning rig. Are you a traditional canning pot user? Or have you cobbled together something more interesting?
  2. Comments will close at 11:59 pm east coast time on Friday, September 14, 2012. Winner will be chosen at random and will be posted to the blog on Saturday, September 15, 2012.
  3. Giveaway is open to US residents.
  4. One comment per person, please. Entries must be left via the comment form on the blog, I cannot accept submissions via email.
Disclosure: Spice Ratchet is providing five Blossom Trivets for this giveaway. They sent me an assortment of their mini blossoms for testing purposes. I’ve not been paid to host this giveaway and my opinions remain my own.
