Food in Jars and Fillmore Container at the Pennsylvania Farm Show

Farm Show Picture

Here in Pennsylvania, we don’t have a summertime state fair. We have the PA Farm Show, which sets up each January in the the sprawling PA Farm Show Complex and Expo Center (and if you think about it, it makes sense. Farmers, growers, and preservers don’t have time for a fair during the height of the season. Doing it in winter is far smarter).

For the last two years now, I’ve spent a couple of days at the Farm Show, hanging out with my friends from Fillmore Container, offering a series of canning demos, and sampling the many treats that the farm show has to offer. This year, I’ll be there on Monday, January 11 and Tuesday, January 12, to demonstration and hopefully sell a few books.

Here’s the schedule:

Monday, January 11
1:30 pm Pear Ginger Conserve from Food in Jars
3:00 pm Winter Fruit Mostarda from Preserving by the Pint
6:00 pm Honey Sweetened Pear Vanilla Jam from Naturally Sweet Food in Jars

Tuesday, January 12
10:00 am Winter Fruit Mostarda from Preserving by the Pint
1:00 pm Honey Sweetened Pear Vanilla Jam from Naturally Sweet Food in Jars @ Family Living Stage
3:00 pm Spicy Pickled Cauliflower from Preserving by the Pint
6:30 pm Caramelized Red Onion Relish from Food in Jars

In celebration of the Farm Show, Fillmore Container is currently offering up a giveaway of some of my favorite canning gear. The pack includes a signed copy of Food in Jars, a blossom trivet, a case of my beloved wide mouth half pint jars, and other good stuff. Click here to enter.

Fillmore Container will also be hosting Amanda Feifer (author of the fabulous Ferment Your Vegetables) and Richard Kralj from the Penn State Cooperative during the show. Amanda will be there on Wednesday, January 13 and Thursday, January 14, talking about fermentation. Richard will be there to offer up a pressure canning demo the morning of Wednesday, January 13.

They’re also currently hosting a giveaway of some of Amanda’s favorite fermenting gear. Make sure to enter that one here.

For more about the preserving events and activities taking place at the Fillmore Container booth at the PA Farm Show, check out this post. You’ll find us on the Main Floor of the complex, in the Family Living area.

A Few Glimpses of the Pennsylvania Farm Show

Best of Show

The 99th Pennsylvania Farm Show opened up today in Harrisburg. I spent most of the day at the Fillmore Container booth, demonstrating some recipes from Preserving by the Pint and chatting with people about new guidelines for jar lids, good things to pressure can, and some of the fun jar accessories on display.

January 10

I slipped away from the booth a couple times to scout out the rest of the show. It was intensely crowded, so I didn’t manage to take more than a few pictures, but I thought I’d share some of the scenes I did capture.

Jazzy Jars

I heard that there were a lot more entries to the Jazzy Jar Contest this year than in those past. Jars are hot!

Some of the entries in the preserves contests. I always enjoy seeing the wide variety of new and old jars people use to hold their fruits and vegetables.

Canning Demos with Fillmore Container at the Pennsylvania Farm Show

Food in Jars at the Farm Show

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season! I spent a week in Austin with my family and came back with a cold (darn pre-schoolers!) and so have been slow to get back into the blogging game. I’ve got a post in the works with some of my hopes for this fresh, new year, but while I gather my thoughts, I wanted to drop in with a quick reminder.

The Pennsylvania Farm Show kicks off next week and I’ll be there offering canning demos on Saturday and Sunday, January 10 and 11! Fillmore Container is hosting a demo station at their booth (like they did last year), and they’ll be having a variety of demonstrations and tutorials throughout the show (don’t miss Amanda from Phickle on Monday and Tuesday). The full schedule of happenings at their booth can be found here (there’s also a fabulous giveaway at the end of that post, so don’t miss it).

My schedule is as follows:

Saturday, January 10

  • 10:30 am: Pear Cranberry Chutney at the Fillmore Container booth
  • 1:30 pm: Dilled Carrot Spears at the Fillmore Container booth
  • 4:30 pm: Pear Chocolate Jam at the Fillmore Container booth

Sunday, January 11

  • 10 am: Strawberry Meyer Lemon Marmalade at the Family Living Stage
  • 1 pm: Dilled Carrot Spears at the Fillmore Container booth
  • 4 pm: Pear Chocolate Jam at the Fillmore Container booth

You can find the complete schedule of presenters over at the Fillmore Container blog. And, of course, I’ll have books available for sale and signature throughout the weekend.

Pictures from the Pennsylvania Farm Show

crowds

After years spent meaning to go to the Pennsylvania Farm Show, I got to spend two whole days there earlier this week. In between my canning demos and book signings, Scott and I wandered around the show. We ate a vast array of fried foods, gawked at the rows of cattle, and admired the chickens, rabbits, and ducks. The photos below are just some of the ones I took while there. The full set of images can be found here.

fried vegetables

Fried broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, and onion rings, served with a horseradish dipping sauce. One of the most delicious things I’ve eaten in recent memory.

Such horns!

All milkshakes should be half chocolate and half vanilla.

Ducklings are delightful, but they don’t like to go on the slide.

I am most definitely a cider lover.

These breaded and fried button mushrooms were delicious!
