Giveaway: Progressive International Lid Lifters

Progressive lid lifters

The Food in Jars giveaway took a bit of a break last week, but happily, I’m back with one of my very favorite canning tools. While I was down in the D.C. area over the weekend, I stayed with a dear friend who happens to live just a stone’s throw from a Crate & Barrel outlet. I am powerless in the face of such possible bargains and so we dashed in for a quick glance at the deals.

I picked up a few extraordinarily cheap Christmas ornaments, a holiday gift for my mom, and a handful of these lid lifters to share. To my mind, this Progressive International Lid Lifter is one of the best versions of this tool on the market. I find that the magnet is just a touch stronger than other lifters and I like the ring on the end (it allows you to extend your reach a little if you’ve dropped your lids in a deep pot of water to soften).

I have four of these lid lifters to give away. Here’s how to enter.

  1. Leave a comment on this post and tell me about your favorite bargain. .
  2. Comments will close at 11:59 pm east coast time on Saturday, October 26, 2013. Winners will be chosen at random (using and will be posted on Sunday, October 27, 2013.
  3. Giveaway is open to US and Canadian residents.
  4. One comment per person, please. Entries must be left on the blog, I cannot accept submissions via email.

My favorite bargain has to be a vintage chair I got at a thrift store for $15. Thanks for the giveaway!

My favorite bargain is the ice cream sandwiches at Diddy Riese in Westwood, CA. Well, they used to be my favorite bargain, but prices have been climbing. At $1.75, though, getting to choose your own cookies and ice cream is still a pretty good deal!

I love looking on Craig’s List to see if anyone has jars that they are giving away. Free is a pretty good bargain to me!

Not related to canning, but I got a suit for a steal recently. I also love, (in a perverse sort of way), that some stores sell canning jars, (and lids), at nearly twice the price of other stores a few blocks away, so the lower-priced store feels like a bargain, even if it might not really be.

My favorite bargain was finding a dehydrator for $5.00. It will be used in my preserving food for my family. Thanks for sharing your products in this contest.

Last year I had decided I wanted to get a dehydrator but I didn’t want to spend $50 in the process. I was worried that I would fall in love with it, once or twice, and then it would sit in my cabinet for the next two years. I found one at a garage sale, filled with dried flowers that I purchased for $1. After a thorough washing I have used my dehydrator many, many times. What a bargain!

My favourite bargain–canning jars at the Goodwill, of course! I’ve only found jars once, so I’d snap them up quick!

Ah – the Crate and Barrel outlet in Alexandria, perchance? My sister used to live nearby, and we’d always go when I visited.

Probably my favorite bargain is the black plastic composting bin in my backyard – got it at least 10 or 12 years ago at the flea market table at a neighborhood may fair for $15. Squirrels have chewed through a couple of the vents, so I thought about replacing it a few years ago and was stunned to discover a similar one for $150! Decided it’s just fine as is.

I could get amazing peach seconds at the farmer’s market by my old house – $5 a bushel! I canned so many peaches that year…

My best canning related bargain has been at my local farmer’s market when the farmer that I regularly bought eggs from sold me a large box of beets for around $3. I think it worked out to be less than 50 cents a pound!

My best big box steal recently was snagging free corduroy pants and a pair of earrings at Kohl’s when the clearance stock was marked down an extra 30% and I had ten bucks Kohl’s cash to spend.

My favorite bargain this month was finding finding a $20 off coupon for Wolfgang Puck’s 5.6 qt enameled cast iron pot at my BJ’s Wholesale Club which totaled $39.99 with the savings. But the best deal of the year was finding a Tech Inferred Pattio Grill in great condition on Craigslist for $250 and after it was cleaned (it took me a week) it looked brand new and works great – these grills start pricing at over $2,000.

my best steal/deal was my current printer a few years ago. it retailed at Staples for about $150, i got it during a sale, ordered online with cashback from a rebate site, with a coupon i bought online for about $2, and got an instant rebate for turning in an old non-working printer someone had given me free when i went to pick up my new printer at the store. in the end, they paid me about $7 to take the printer off their hands!

I sew a LOT. I had an old favorite fabric shop (sadly, no longer there) in LA’s garment district where the short, round, jovial proprietor would sing loudly while tossing around rolls of cloth. Once I got some lovely white linen for 50 cents a yard, a big bag of buttons for a dollar, black velveteen for $1/yard… I miss that store.

This summer. I have been consistently fermenting sauerkraut & veggies.
    Time to make pickles.
